Deep Foundations uses micro-piles to solve site challenges

STAFF WRITER – The GTA Construction Report Special Feature

Deep Foundations Contractors Ltd. had special chal- lenges in working on the Evergreen Brick Works site. The contractor needed to work in and around heritage buildings sensitive to vibration. “The subsurface conditions consisted of very weak compressible soils – with man-made fill, very soft native silty clay and silty sands deposited in glacial times for a depth of approximately 6 m.,” said Deep Foundations vice-president Peter McDonald. “Below this was bedrock.” “To address the tight site conditions and to minimize vi- bration from construction equipment, we elected to install micro-piles, rather than more conventional driven piles. These micro-piles transferred the structural loads to solid bedrock.”
