hile some of us may hang onto every last second of the flip flop wearing season, there are others among us who can’t wait to pull on a pair of socks, boots and a nice woolly jumper. Once you’ve made this wardrobe change though, there’s no turning back so a transitional period offers the perfect solution. Ease yourself in gently, keep warm but keep your options open. The key is textured layers and don’t be afraid to mix it up a bit. Throw on a slouchy knit over a pretty dress and a cape or an aviator jacket with almost anything. Luxe fabric is the name of the game for autumn with velvet, lace and faux fur making star appearances all over the high street, punctuated with animal print for those who dare. The nudes of spring and summer have turned a shade darker in the heat, so turn your attention centre stage to camel and its sister hues of khaki, minks and taupe. Stage right comes the lip-smacking berry colours of Ribena which give the whole performance extra depth and warmth and the understudy: socks, seen on catwalks across the globe, usually worn with a heel so not the easiest look to pull off unless you are auditioning for Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but don’t let that put you off.
