basis and The French House was born. And such is the quality of their furniture,

they now have a number of celebrities as regular customers. Stephen said: “Marcus had this idea that

we could create a business selling this type of affordable French antique furniture and it just grew and grew. “The key has always been to not overprice

it and we pride ourselves on not charging ridiculous amounts for our pieces. “The biggest sellers are the beds, furniture,

upholstered chandeliers and

mirrors but in recent years the old mannequins which people used to use in their homes have gone through the roof. “We sell about 60 a year and the problem is

sourcing them as they are becoming harder to find.” The Hazells spend nearly half the year in

France and have built up relationships with lawyers and estate agents who tell them when there is a house available for clearance. In the early days, many customers demanded their purchases were fully restored but changing trends have seen more and more of the items left in their original state. Having said that, there is an on-site

restorer, upholsterer, metal worker and gilder who can bring the most damaged goods back to life. And with that, Stephen disappears

amongst the mannequins again in search of that elusive French armchair.
