Circuit Board Capacitor Failure – What Causes Capacitors to Fail in Electronic Circuit Boards?


Capacitors are an integral part of all circuit boards. When they fail, the cause is usually a sustained power surge that exceeds the threshold limit of that capacitor.


However, the cause can also be attributed to a rise in ESR values as measured by an ESR meter.


ESR stands for Equivalent Series Resistance and it is measured in ohms. Ideally, a capacitor should have an ESR value of zero ohms, or close to zero. But with corrosion and drying, the resistance value starts going up by decimals.


Remember that even a marginal increase in ESR value can cause problems in capacitor functioning. But when it does
