says Stanley. ‘But given that most shops will have smooth floors, it’s as much about trying to prevent the risk of slipping as it is about floor protection. Dry dust and debris can also be a slip hazard, and of course being abrasive can damage smooth floors.’ Matting can either be laid to surface or

installed in recessed wells, and there are today many options available for both types of entrance area. It is important that any matting installed does not become a trip hazard, and therefore mats that are laid to surface should ideally have a ramped edge. This also helps wheeled access and it must be DDA compliant.

‘Surfaces, whether used as display units, counter tops, furniture, fittings or changing facilities, play an important role in the retail environment.’ Neil Sookee, design director Europe and Asia, Formica Group

Entrance matting should also be regularly cleaned and well-maintained to stay effective. The right type of matting that scrapes dirt and wipes excess moisture from footwear can actually save significant amounts of money spent on overall cleaning costs.
