Pelham Golfers Start Strong in 2010 Pelham’s Jesse Vaiknoras sinks a put in last Tursday’s action

by Chris White The Pelham golf team hosted its first home match of the 2010 season at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands Golf Course in Salem last Thursday, September 2. The Pythons collectively shot a 194 to place third in the overall match, losing to Hollis-Brookline (182) and Souhegan (186), but topping John Stark (218). Despite the two losses, four Pelham golfers finished with scores under 40 after playing nine holes. Jesse Vaiknoras (37) was Pelham’s low man; while Alex Newton (38), Nick Neary (39), and Alec Surprenant (39) were all close behind him. Jake Vaiknoras (41) rounded out the scoring for the Pythons as their number-five scorer. The individual match

was won by a Hollis-Brookline golfer who shot a 32 overall. The match put Pelham’s record at 7-2 on the young season. The Pythons already had two matches previous to their home opener—the first on Thursday, August 26, at ConVal, and the second on Tuesday, August 31, at Windham. They went undefeated on both occasions and look to keep building on their strong start. The Pythons also have some pretty high expectations after last season, their best in program history with a 14-12 record and an 11th-place finish at the state tournament. “We’re not only expecting and hoping to improve that record, but we’re shooting for the top five at the state tournament,” Pelham coach Joe Vaiknoras said. “We have 12 very hard-working young men on our team who want to win.” Entering this season, Pelham has a good mix of accomplished players coming back from last year’s team, as well as some younger talent coming into the program. Several of the team’s incoming freshmen this year played on the Pelham Memorial

School state championship golf team last spring. The Pythons also sport a roster where a number of their players are proven athletes in multiple sports. “They’re a good bunch of kids,” Vaiknoras said. “They’re serious about their golf and they find the right balance between working hard and enjoying themselves.” With the accelerated pace of the golf season, Pelham has only six matches left—all to be played before Thursday, September 23. The Pythons’ next home match will be their final one on their home course, where they will meet with Portsmouth and Milford on Thursday, September 16, at 3:30 p.m.

Windham Girls’ Soccer Splits First Two Games

Windham’s Kelsey Schiebel makes a move to dodge a St. Tomas defender last Friday

by Chris White The Windham girls’ soccer team

has kicked off its first varsity season by splitting its first pair of games in 2010. The Jaguars took a convincing 4-1 win over Manchester West in the season opener at home on Friday, August 27, but then lost to defending Class I state champion St. Thomas Aquinas 5-0 at home on Friday, September 3. Hosting West, Windham’s scoring

was led by Bernadette Connors as she provided her team with two goals and one assist. Clairee Putnam and Kelsey Schiebel also added one goal apiece, while Sarah Chau contributed two assists and Rachel Vafides had one

assist. Windham maintained a strong defense in the three-goal victory as West’s only score came on an own goal by Windham. Windham faced a physical battle with

St. Thomas the following Friday in a game that preceded the home football opener. The game gave the Jaguars some strong competition, which they responded to positively.

St. Thomas

opened up a 4-0 lead by halftime, but Windham adjusted well in the second half and allowed only one more goal. The Jaguars were on the road in Milford this past Tuesday afternoon and will return to play on their home field versus John Stark today at 4:15 p.m.

Manchester East Cobras: The Pelham- Windham Razorbacks Third Grade Team improved to 2-0 with a dominant win over the visiting Manchester East Cobras. The game started with the Razorbacks defense pushing the offense back 23 yards, with great tackles in the backfield by Matt Frechette, Matt Jozokos, and Eddie Shlimon before taking over on downs. The offense wasted little time before getting on the board with a nifty run around the left end by Jake Dunlap for a 12-yard touchdown behind the outstanding line play of Jarrett O’Connor, Tyler Passamonte, Stevie Bouchard, Jake Herrling, Ian Hoey, Colin Campbell, and Nick Branco. Tom “Bubbles” Ouellette added the extra point with a run the right end to take a 7-0 lead. The defense again held the Cobras from getting a first down. The Razorbacks again were quick to strike with a

38-yard touchdown by Dunlap behind the strong blocking of James “Jimbo” Langenfeld, Dylan Santosuosso, Jaxon Snyder, Mason Fecteau, Cameron Hyder, Saku Kulesza, and Joseph “Jo Jo” DaSilva. “Bubbles” Ouellette converted the extra point for a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The second-quarter highlight was an exciting run by quarterback Ethan Ford, who made a great cutback across the grain before finishing with a 33-yard touchdown. The extra point was denied and the Razorbacks held a 20-0 lead at halftime. The scoring continued in the second half with a 32-yard run up the middle by tailback Tommy Doe, giving the Razorbacks a 26-0 win. The Pelham-Windham Razorback

Third Grade Team started the season on the road against the Nashua PAL Force. Nashua started strong on the opening drive of the game, converting two fourth-down plays to maintain possession. Nashua eventually scored on a short run to the outside. The Razorback defense buckled down and prevented the extra point with a superb tackle from “Bubbles” Ouellette. The Razorbacks would respond on the ensuing kickoff with a 40-yard return by Dunlap to the Nashua 22-yard line. A few plays later, the Razorbacks were on the board after a six-yard touchdown run by Doe behind the strong blocking of O’Connor, Jack Matuszewski, Bouchard, Herrling, Hoey, Campbell, and Branco. Dunlap ran in the extra point for a 7-6 lead, which lasted until halftime. The second half started with both teams being shut down offensively until Dunlap intercepted a pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. “Bubbles” Ouellette ran in the extra point for a 14-6 lead. The Razorbacks defense had a superb day and was led by Doe, Ben Plumley, Hoey, Jozokos, Frechette, Shlimon, Ouellette, Dunlap, Luke Schramm, Ford, and Tyler “Bubba” Champagne. The defense forced Nashua PAL to punt on a 4th and 30 yards to go play. The Razorbacks offense took the field on a mission to score. Mission accomplished, as Dunlap ran 57 yards around the right end to score his second TD of the game behind the superb blocking of Jozokos, Matuszewski, Frechette, Ryan Leuteritz, Eli Nicolopoulos, Joshua “Soupy” Surprenant, and Plumley. The extra point was denied to give the Razorbacks a 20-6 win.
