Artillery Shells Found in Home’s Basement
submitted by Pelham Police Department On September 2 at approximately 1:25 p.m., the Pelham Fire Department received a report from a Simpson Road resident that he had found two artillery shells in his mother’s basement. Members of the police department responded to the residence and began to investigate the finding. Officers learned that an elderly woman resides in the house and that her son was at the house cleaning the basement when he found the shells. It was further learned that the women’s husband passed away in 1969 and that prior to his death, he had been employed at the Boston, MA, Navy Yard. The officers then contacted the New Hampshire State Police Bomb Squad and on the information gained during the investigation, it was determined that the
shells could be left where they were and a closer inspection would be conducted the following day.
On September 3, members of the
Pelham Police Department and the New Hampshire State Police Bomb Squad responded back to the residence in order to remove the artillery shells. The New Hampshire State Police Bomb Technician, after x-raying each shell, determined that the shells were safe to be moved and transported for further inspection and/or destruction. The shells were then removed from the house and have been turned over to the New Hampshire State Police.
It is believed that the artillery shells are
at least World War II-era and have been inside the home for at least 40 years, unbeknownst to the resident.
