• September 9, 2010 - September 15, 2010 Heartstrings from me to you

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no for- getting September the 11th. We will re- member every rescuer who died in hon- or. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fi re and ash, the last phone calls, the funer- als of the children. “ - President George W. Bush, November 11, 2001

I open with this powerful quote as it guid- ed my decision on what to write about this week. It occurred to me that this coming weekend holds deep meaning for most Americans, so I will focus my column on this historic topic. It is hard to perceive that it’s been 9 years since our beloved nation – The United States of America experienced perhaps its worst tragedy on our soil. Septem- ber 11, 2001. This day will continue to be signifi cant in the minds of most Americans as we remember the tragic events of 9-11. Therefore, I’ve al- ways felt that the mantra that was given to this terrible day is perfect – “Let us Never Forget.”

I remember so clearly that very

morning. Not because of how I was glued to the television, but moreover because of how I wasn’t. I don’t make it a practice to turn on the television or radio in the morn- ing as I am always rushed to get ready for work. On this particular morning, being a new teacher, I arrived at work about 6:20 a.m. and as usual began getting the ma- terials ready for a new day of learning. I remember rushing around making copies, getting textbooks ready and whatever else was on my preparation schedule. It was about 7:15 a.m. when my colleagues in the teachers lounge were talking hysteri- cally about the terrible event that had hap- pened a couple hours earlier. I was totally in the dark, as I had no idea what anyone was talking about. I had been totally oblivi- ous to the fact that our Nation had been attacked. As I left the lounge, Beth, my colleague called me over to watch on her classroom television, the updates that were being announced. I was fl abbergasted as I witnessed for the fi rst time, the planes plowing into OUR World Trade Center Buildings. I could literally feel cold chills run up and down my spine as the scene of those initial impacts were played several times over again. I explained to Beth that I was totally unaware of the current events that were taking place that morning. As the morning progressed and my students arrived, I could sense the fear in each one of them. They asked me several times if the terrorists were going to come back and at- tack us where we were located. I remained as calm as possible and reassured them that we were safe where we were. Personally,

What do You Remember about Sept. 11, 2001?

this morning will always stand out in my mind because of the sense of ignorance that I still feel today. The images of black clouds fi ll-

ing the streets as the buildings collapsed, people running frantically trying to fi nd a safe haven, people clutching their faces as the wept uncontrollably will be forever be embedded in our minds. Not to men- tion those frantic citizens who jumped instinctively from the burning towers, several stories high, in hopes of landing on their feet and running away from that horrible nightmare. It seemed as though there was an un- ending feeling of helplessness as Americans and the world watched these horrendous oc- currences take place right before our very eyes. I sincerely believe that these imag- es have affected every American in some way. My heart still bleeds

whenever I think about the calamitous events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. The following quote has also left a per- manent imprint on the minds of millions as it describes 9-11 to a T:

“Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifi ce, and the love that lays down its life for a friend–even a friend whose name it never knew. “ - President George W. Bush, December 11, 2001.

Without turning this column into one of political nature, I would like to say that despite the fact that September 11th has had an adverse effect on the United States economy, the memory of this cata- strophic day will or should remain on our minds forever. This year Sept. 11th will fall on a Saturday. I know that Saturdays are busy for everyone as many of us run errands, work around our homes, or at- tend functions with family and friends. But I feel that as Americans it is impera- tive that we pause for a few moments out of our busy day to refl ect on this tragedy and remember all those courageous indi- viduals who may have lost their lives on that day, especially those civilians in the Twin Towers. We must never forget about the many fi refi ghters, police offi cers, doc- tors, nurses and the countless number of volunteers who worked diligently to res- cue as many lives as possible. All of them showing intense bravery as many in fact did lay down their own life to save anoth- er whether they knew them or not; this was their ultimate sacrifi ce. So in closing I have four simple but heartfelt words to share with you: “Let us Never Forget!”
