The clubhouse, best known as the Glen Oak Country Club and built by Dan River Mills, was destroyed by flames ear- lier this week. Although the fire was under control within the hour, it took firefighters four hours to put out the hot spots. All that remains of the clubhouse are a few walls.
Assistant Danville Fire Chief, Steve Dishman, says the call came in before 2:00 a.m. as an explosion at the clubhouse. The first units at the scene reported smoke and flames billow- ing from the country club, located near Stokesland Avenue Ex- tension. In all, three engines, a ladder truck and 15 firemen responded.
The clubhouse is seated in Danville’s history. The ballroom was the location for many dances and proms. The clubhouse and greens, sold by the mill, operated most recently as Ray’s Creek Golf Club. The clubhouse may have been destroyed, but the golf course was open Tuesday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
