After transferring to Black Hills State University because it off ered the outdoor education degree she wanted, Dawn Glanc - a native of Ohio - immersed herself in her classwork and the climbing culture of the Black Hills.
Dawn got her fi rst taste of guiding at BHSU while leading some instructional courses for the University. She also worked for a small guide service during her summers in the Black Hills.
Always pushing the limits and looking for the next challenge, Dawn took a full-time guiding position with the American Alpine Institute. For the past fi ve years, she has averaged more than 200 days of climbing and guiding each year and has had the opportunity to climb mountains across the western United States and in Norway, Europe, Thailand, Canada, and France.
She was also featured on the cover of Alpinist 27, has participated in an awareness climb in Alaska for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, was featured on Epic Conditions, a television show on The Weather Channel where extreme sports meet the perfect weather conditions, and placed fi rst in the 2009 Ouray Colorado Ice Festival.

Institute’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
With support from BHSU American Indian Studies instructor Jace DeCory and an internship at the Smithsonian, Mandy landed her dream job developing training material and delivering hands-on orientations, programs, and tours at the living cultural museum.
