Certainly psychedelics are not the ultimate answer, the end-all of the process of human growth. The potential they have to assist with this process, though, deserves to be acknowledged and treated in a mature manner. Psy- chedelics can be medicine of great magic, but they are by no means toys. When used in a befitting manner – in the right amount, in a suitable environment, and with proper intention – they can provide tremendously cathartic and vitalizing experiences. Improper use can result in super- ficial or negative experiences that can fail to convey any- thing of value, and can even produce harm to body and mind.

To use psychedelics is to play with fire. And fire, some say, is the most powerful of all gifts the gods have given humanity. To invite a psychedelic fire into one's nervous system can serve as an alchemical opportunity to burn out dross and ignite realization, or the fire can simply produce another burnout. Anyone who has been around

what we might loosely call the hippie scene for awhile has seen the burnouts to which I refer. Having a spacious consciousness is enlightening, joyous, and compassionate. Being fried or spaced-out is pretty much just dumb.

Psychedelics can serve as spiritual alarm-clocks, waking us out of our materialistic pig-like stupors into a new paradigm of ourselves as divine beings. Or these potent tools can be just another avenue for petty indulgence and self-destruction. As the world grows smaller and reaches a tipping point in many ways, it is increasingly important we realize our divine nature so that we understand the purpose of life and how to live harmoniously with others. If we choose to utilize psychedelics to assist with our re- alization, it is worthwhile to use them consciously for the benefit of ourselves, our planet, and all living beings.
