Time Off - Local Garden Visits Somerset gardens you must visit in September…

13 Rydon Crescent and Walled Gardens of Cannington

The bungalow in Rydon Crescent, Cannington, is a new opening for the NGS this year, but owners John and Maureen Hudson are old hands as they opened their other garden, The Mill, for the Yellow Book for 18 years. They have downsized but in three years at their new property they have designed and filled the garden with plants – ‘and all on horrid clay soil, slightly acid and never properly cultivated in its 50 years.’ It’s certainly well cultivated now, with 60 clematis and 15 climbing roses, a small vegetable and

fruit garden, glasshouse and summerhouse. Well known local gardener, Mrs Hudson ran the Cannington Flower Show for over 20 years and has just given up organising their village’s Front Garden Competition. The Hudsons are keen members of Plant Heritage (NCCPG), founder members of the British Clematis Society and members of the International Clematis Society.

Lytes Cary Manor

Early autumn is a lovely time to visit Lytes Cary, near Somerton, once the home of the medieval herbalist Henry Lyte, now a National Trust property. The garden is laid out in a series of contrasting ‘rooms’ in the Arts and Crafts style, there are lovely mixed borders, statues and a herbal border based on the 16th century Lyte’s Herbal, which can be seen in the house. The path to the front entrance is flanked by large topiary bushes. The house, with its 14th century chapel and 15th century Great Hall, was saved from dereliction in the last century by Sir Walter Jenner. There are good walks beyond the gardens in the wider estate
