Top photographers highlight ancient Somerset forest
One of Steven Drewett’s photographs which explore how veteran trees hold clues to the past
The Ancient Forest of Selwood is attracting the attention of five well known artists and photographers, amongst them Don McCullin, war photographer, and BBC Wildlife presenter, Simon King at an exhibition held at At The Chapel, Bruton from 28th September - 30th October.
Images taken of the Forest, in Somersets’ Frome and Bruton area, will be shown in a
special exhibition to raise the profile of this treasured, little known forest.
Together the five top artists and photographers, many of whom live in the area, will put on this inspired exhibition: Don McCullin brings his immense experience as a photojournalist to capturing trees in the local landscape; Rob Kessler will exhibit some of his unique photo-micrographs of pollen taken from trees in the Selwood Forest; Steven Drewetts’ photographs explore how veteran trees hold clues to the past; Venetia Dearden, well known for her photographs of people at Glastonbury Festival, includes local people in her landscape images and Simon King, who lives near Bruton and patron of the Somerset Wildlife Trust will focus on woodland wildlife.
During the exhibition two related talks will take place at Bruton School for Girls: On 7th October 7.30pm, ancient tree expert, Ted Green will speak on Trees past, present and future; on 29th October, 7.30pm Rob Kesseler will be talking about his extraordinary pollen images. Rob is a visual artist and Professor of Ceramic Art & Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
Tickets are £7.50 and can be bought online
www.somersetwildlife.org or send a cheque to Patricia Stainton, Cooks Farm, North Brewham, Bruton, Somerset BA10 0JQ with a stamped addressed envelope stating which talks you would like to attend. At the Chapel was voted Best Restaurant at the Taste of Somerset Awards 2010.
Country Gardener
Nursery is first to offer Society membership
Cleeve Nursery has become the first retail nursery in the country to offer membership to the RHS. Cleeve beat all other garden centres to be first to sign up to offer membership of the Royal Horticultural Society to their customers. Alan Down, who owns Cleeve Nursery with his wife Felicity, said “For us this was a natural progression since we have, for many years, provided partnership events for the RHS in the Bristol area.”
The RHS is the organiser of the world famous Chelsea Flower Show and the largest flower show in the world in Hampton Court Flower Show
Other garden shows that the RHS have a major part in organising are within easy reach of Bristol, notably the shows at Cardiff, Malvern and BBC Gardeners World at the NEC, Birmingham. RHS membership enables gardeners to visit these top shows on privileged members only days.
The next partnership event with the RHS at Cleeve Nursery is on 21st September when there will be a demonstration of the Inspirational use of Spring Bulbs. Tickets for this event are available from the RHS tel 0845 612 1253.
