Further down in Devon, St. Bridget’s Nurseries on the outskirts of Exeter offers a range of trees and shrubs that are good for autumn colour. The nursery is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year and is one of the oldest in the country, the family run business now into its fourth generation.
Plants are available at their garden centre or by mail order. Trees grown in the open field are available from November to March, the containerised plants in the garden centre all year. Nearly 900 shrub varieties and over 130 different conifers are available, as are nearly 200 different ornamental and fruit trees.
Situated on the lower slopes of the beautiful Malvern Hills, Old Court Nurseries were founded in 1906 by Ernest Ballard and is the birthplace of the modern Michaelmas Daisy. Today it is run by Paul, Meriel and Helen Picton as a family enterprise, now in its third generation.
In the 1960s a reduction in the area of land needed for growing Asters gave an opportunity to create a garden of stock beds for plants to be sold in the nursery. After the death of Percy Picton in 1984, son Paul and his wife Meriel enlarged the garden to include large borders of asters and began an ongoing programme of re-planting and re-design.
In 1985, to mark the formation of the Percy Picton Memorial Fund the garden was named The Picton Garden. The charity provides grants to students of horticulture at Pershore College. The garden now houses the National Plant Collection® of autumn flowering asters (Michaelmas Daisies). Alongside the inspiring collection of over 400 varieties of michaelmas daisy there is a wide range of rare and interesting autumn shrubs and perennials for late season colour.
