Time Off - Local Garden Visits Cotswold gardens to visit in September...
Trench Hill, Sheepscombe
The three-acre garden at Trench Hill, set in woodland with panoramic views across the Gloucestershire countryside, has all year interest. Its many openings through the year for the NGS reflects this, from thousands of snowdrops and hellebores in early spring to roses and herbaceous borders in summer, a woodland walk and wild flower areas. The garden is run on organic principles, particularly noticeable in the large vegetable plots. Water features in abundance too, with small ponds, a waterfall and a larger conservation pond. Look out for the interesting wooden sculptures positioned around.
Wyck Rissington Gardens
Wyck Rissington Gardens - a new venue opening for the NGS
A new venue opening for the NGS, four enchanting and contrasting gardens in this unspoilt Cotswold village, with its wide village green dominated by fine horse chestnut trees. Greenfields Farm offers vistas beyond
the ha-ha across the Windrush Valley, modern sculpture contrasting with abundant fruit trees including ancient perry pears, a wildlife pond and woodland walk.
Stone House is a 2½ acre cottage garden created in the past 14 years, and has regular openings for the NGS, with its glorious succession of spring bulbs from February to May, and summer-long colour. In September there is still much to see in the garden rooms that flow round the house, complementing it and the surrounding countryside, the crab apple walk, herb and water garden, meadow walk and some late roses.
College Farm is a newly created garden around an 18th century house. From the formal courtyard entrance wander across the delightful terraces to find the duck pond and the cottage garden plants.
