The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Do Your Homework before Voting

Can you name all 13 of your state representatives?

Do you know what they stand for or how they voted on issues you believe are important? Their votes determine the amount of our taxes, how those taxes are spent, and to what extent the government regulates our lives. Having served Windham and Salem in the New Hampshire legislature, I’ve seen how some legislators stay true to the promises they made as candidates, while others go through the biennial ritual of masquerading as something they’re not to get re-elected. But how can we tell the difference? Perhaps the

best way to measure your legislators’ performance is to analyze their voting records. Most of us don’t have the time to pore through hundreds of votes for more than a dozen legislators, but fortunately, there is a respected conservative organization that does the work for us. The New Hampshire House Republican Alliance (HRA) is the conservative caucus in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. The purpose of the HRA is to preserve and strengthen the traditional principles and values of the Republican Party, including fiscal restraint, personal freedom and responsibility, limited government, free enterprise, and strong families. Every year, they score each legislator’s voting record against the NH Republican Party Platform and the NH Constitution. The following are the most recent scores for the 11 incumbents and two previous legislators running for state representative this year in the order they appear on the ballot (starting at “M”): John J. Manning, 68 percent; Charles McMahon, 87 percent; Kevin Waterhouse, 90 percent; David Bates, 97 percent; Ron Belanger, 70 percent; D.J. Bettencourt, 91 percent; Margaret Crisler, 71 percent; Anthony DiFruscia 47 percent; Robert Elliot 79 percent; Marilinda Garcia 89 percent; Mary Griffin 79 percent; Russell Ingram, 77 percent; and Walter Kolodziej, 98 percent. We are fortunate that only two candidates scored

below 70 percent. The majority of our representatives have a proven track record of supporting Republican principles. By contrast, the incumbent who scored below 50 percent should consider running as a Democrat, as he did when he served in the Massachusetts legislature.

Besides the incumbents and prior legislators listed

above, there are eight other candidates on the ballot this year, six of whom have been endorsed by another great organization, the Republican Liberty Caucus. They are: Gary Azarian, Bruce Breton, Donna Mauro, Richard Okerman, Mark Samsel, and John Sytek. On a related note, if we’re going to judge Republican legislators by their adherence to the state GOP Platform, we need to elect delegates to the state convention who will ensure that the platform stands for conservative principles. For this reason, I wholeheartedly support candidates Ted Maravelias and Rich Florino, both of whom have worked tirelessly to promote liberty, free

enterprise, and limited government in the “Live Free or Die” state. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. Simply voting

for any candidate with an “R” next to their name is not enough. If you want to ensure that your representatives are truly representing your values, you have to do your homework. I highly suggest cutting out the above ratings and endorsements to bring to the polls on Tuesday, September 14. It’s a small price to pay to elect those who support liberty.

Honorable Jason Bedrick - Windham

Marilinda Garcia for State Representative

I wanted to write and show my support for Marilinda

Garcia as one of our state representatives in Concord. Marilinda has always voted for fiscal responsibility in a legislature that has increased our budget by 25 percent. Marilinda has also consistently voted for free enterprise and to defend our small businesses against unnecessary regulations and tax increases. The Democrats in the legislature forced almost 20 votes and eventually succeeded in redefining marriage in our state and also stripped parents of their parental rights. Marilinda has always advocated for traditional values and regularly testifies on these issues. After having been in office for four years, Marilinda is now running for her third term. I will gladly cast my vote for her and for Representatives who share her positions on the issues, and I encourage you to do the same on September 14.

G. Binaghi - Salem Big Government Invented

Most people in our country are in the middle class as a society. We were and are the hard-working, straight- talking, family-oriented American people who love America! When progressive, liberal, left-wing policies threaten the very existence of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, then it is time to tell these liberal, left-wing Democrats to take a hike. One needs to vote out of office every progressive leftist that is trying to bankrupt America and make us a beholder to Communist countries like China with our borrowed stimulus money. The real truth is that many taxes starting in 2011 are coming to pay for this Obama misadventure! We all need to understand that liberal progressives have a hard time recognizing real truth, so they reinvent the facts to fit the situation! Progressives are out to destroy the middle-class Americans. The George Bush tax breaks (granted) gave a little too much benefit to the upper income of Americans earning over $250,000, though many created jobs. However, if the cuts expire on January 2, 2011, middle- class, working America will also see a drastic loss in tax benefits; an example of real help during the Bush Republican Administration. What may happen if the repeal is carried forward by President Obama? (1) The lowest rate will rise from 10 percent to 15 percent on individuals, affecting 90 million taxpayers to pay $500 or more income taxes per year.

care tax credit will be reduced from $1,000 to $500. This will affect 30 million middle tax families with the loss of over $1,000 per family.

(3)

The return of the marriage penalty tax will affect about 30 million families for a loss of about $500. The Democratic socialists’

lawmakers and their misinformed, apologist, leftist supporters cannot and will not recognize the truth as it is (not) in their elitist, progressive interests. They want one-world government by joining with socialist Europe. In our country, they have worked to bring more burdens

on middle-class, working families to a poverty level (redistribution of wealth). Democrat programs that corrupted the housing boom to foreclosures. In 2010, Congress approved new, current financial bank and credit laws, and their new, heavy-burden fees are being felt by all Americans.

Pro-socialists dislike free enterprise! These elected big-spending, out-of-touch, educated idiots need to be removed by voting them out of office to get our country back to a normal pace, creating American jobs and saving freedom! “Live Free or Die.” May God Bless

Support for Jennifer Horn for Congress

The summer is just about over and we have an election coming up on September 14. Just about everyone agrees the country is in tough shape and this election is the first step in trying to fix the system. I would like everyone to think about what has brought us to this place and what kind of person we need to get us back on the right track so that there is opportunity for all and prosperity for the country.

In looking at the candidates for the Second Congressional District for the U.S. House, there is one candidate that I believe has the knowledge and courage to do the things that are needed. Jennifer Horn is that person. I have asked her the tough questions and been impressed with her views. She will not waste time on the unimportant things. She will work to make our economy strong again. We need her honesty and strength of character. This may be the most important election in years

and I would appreciate it if you would take the time to consider voting for Jennifer Horn for the U.S. House. She is a person that you and I can be proud of and depend on to represent us and do the right thing for Salem and the nation. The political system is broken and we need new leaders. This election is too important to just vote for the old, familiar names. We need strong leadership to make the tough decisions. The old ways of politics are too expensive and cannot be afforded. We need new leadership for the new times we live in. I ask you all to vote for Jennifer Horn for the U.S.

Why I Have the Experience for ‘High Sheriff’

in Rockingham County

The position “High Sheriff” in Rockingham County demands real-life experience and training to lead the sheriff’s department in the 21st century. The sheriff of Rockingham County is the “Chief” law enforcement officer in the county. His authority extends to each and every town in Rockingham County, as well as all the counties in the State of New Hampshire.

I have been a resident of the State of New Hampshire and the County of Rockingham for over 40 years. I have two wonderful sons, two terrific grandsons, and one beautiful granddaughter, who reside locally. I have 37 years of law enforcement experience, 24

years with Salem Police Department, and 13 years with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department. I have been supervising police officers for 17 years, and a Police Administrator for five years. I am a certified “Law Enforcement Officer” in New Hampshire.

I am a Commissioner with the Salem Housing

Authority. My law enforcement career began in Salem when I joined the Salem Police Department in 1973 as a patrolman. I attended the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy, and graduated “First” in my class in academic achievements and first in firearms proficiency. In 1976, I received the Selectman’s Commendation for the detection and apprehension of four suspects in a burglary at Market Basket on Route 28. In 1984, I received the Salem Kiwanis Club Policeman

of the year award for extensive investigations and arrests for illegal drug sales and possession. I was transferred to the New Hampshire Drug Task

force in 1985. I was promoted to Sergeant in 1986. In 1990, I was transferred from Patrol Supervisor to Administrative Sergeant.

My next promotion came in 1993 when I achieved

the rank of Lieutenant. I was assigned as a shift commander for an agency that employed 85 sworn personnel, and staff support personnel of 20. On October 31, 1997, after a wonderful career with the Salem Police Department, I retired to take on another challenge. On November 4, 1997, I accepted a position as Sergeant with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department at the Manchester Airport. I spent many hours in counter terrorist training; this was the very beginning of changes that would last forever. There will be no “learning curve” when I am elected the next Sheriff of Rockingham County. I am already here; ready to work for you, my constituents. We are experiencing difficult times; fiscal responsibility and transparency are a must if we are to stop spending increases that result in higher taxes. And above all, I pledge to “provide public safety services, emphasizing professionalism, cooperation, competence, and integrity in order to foster a partnership which will preserve and improve the quality of life in Rockingham County.” The Primary Election day is Tuesday, September 14. I appreciate your consideration, and ask for your vote at the polls.
