Boys’ Soccer Falls in Season Opener


by Chris White The Salem girls’ soccer team opened the 2010 season with a win over Dover at home on Tuesday. The Blue Devils didn’t end up playing their best game, but it was enough to grab a 4-1 victory. Salem scored three goals


over the course of the first half to take a commanding lead before the break. Dover ended up netting one goal to cut Salem’s lead to 3-1 at halftime, but that as close as it would come.

by Chris White The Salem Blue Devils opened the 2010 soccer season when they hosted Exeter last Friday. The Devils came into the game focused on outplaying their opponent, but Exeter took advantage of a few opportunities and came out on top, 3-1. Exeter took an early 1-0 lead after the start of the game, and the score would remain that way until halftime. After the goal, neither team could really get anything going toward its offensive end of the field. Salem created a couple of decent


scoring opportunities, but could not convert either of them. Salem would get on the board about midway


through the second half, though, when Peter Ventola went top shelf to knot the score at 1-1. Ventola received a nice assist from Justin Mosher and then kicked the ball to the upper left corner of the net, just over the reach of the Exeter goalkeeper. However, the Blue Hawks would answer by capitalizing on a couple bounces that went their way. The Blue Hawks found the back of the net with about 15 minutes left in the game to take the lead for good and then they added another goal toward the end of the contest to polish off the victory.


After the loss, Salem’s record fell to 0-1 while Exeter improved to 1-0. The Blue Devils faced Dover on the road on Tuesday, and they return to action at home versus Winnacunnet this afternoon at 4 p.m.

Salem’s first two goals, while Salem’s third goal came off the foot of Jersey Burns. Burns received a nice cross from freshman Emily Hickey on the play, and then booted the ball home for the score. Salem added one more in the second half when Cassie Chase kicked the ball past the Dover goalkeeper on a breakaway unassisted.


In addition to their balanced scoring attack, the Blue Devils also exhibited some stellar play on the back line. Anchored by seniors Mackenzie Miller and Hanna LaRochelle, the Salem defense did a nice job of keeping Dover’s strikers in check. “They do a nice job of keeping it simple, making good decisions, and getting out of danger,” Salem coach Kendrick Whittle said of the Blue Devil back line. “That allows us to attack more up top.” Salem spent much of the game at its


offensive end, thanks to its defense on both sides of the field. Because of that, the Devils were able to push forward and be dangerous offensively for most of the game. Salem will look to produce some more


positive results when it faces Winnacunnet on the road in its next game scheduled for Friday, and then in its following game at Manchester Central on Tuesday.
