Pythons Kick Off Football Season Next Friday

by Chris White The 2010 football season will be a little different than usual for the Pelham Pythons with the divisional realignments made by the NHIAA this past year. After advancing to the Division 5 semifinals last season, the Pythons will move up to Division 3 this fall.

It will definitely be a new challenge for the Pythons, who won state titles in 2007 and 2008. They will face larger schools and more talented teams than they saw playing in their old league. Plus, the Pythons have graduated a number of key contributors from last year’s squad, including quarterback Joe DeAngelo, receiver Josh Luciano, running back Cam Robidoux, and linebacker Conor McColgan. Still, the Pythons will return a strong core of players who made all-state in 2009, including Kevin Cheam, Warren

Greenhalgh, and Tim Schaffer. The returning group will look to provide leadership to the new members of the program as the players work on improving themselves as the season goes on. Pelham has been practicing since the second week of August and has had a number of scrimmages since then as well. Last month, the Pythons faced Sanborn, Monadnock, St. Thomas, Hanover, and Assabet Valley in pre-season contests. These competitions have helped them prepare for what’s to come this season, which will be a challenging one in Division 3. Pelham will kick off its season next week on Friday, September 10, at ConVal. The team’s home opener will be the following Friday when the Pythons host Bedford at 7 p.m.

Blue Devil Golfers Prepare for 2010 Season by Chris White

As an underdog going into the Class L tournament last year, Salem coach Ben Adams asked his golfers to just concentrate on doing what they do. The result: Salem won its second Class L crown in as many years, topping an undefeated Pinkerton squad in the process. Now with the Devils entering the 2010 season as the two-time defending champions, Adams will once again ask his golfers to do the same thing when they compete in Division 1 this fall. “What I try to reinforce with them is to be

steady and play the game that you have,” Adams said. “You don’t want to put them in a position where they feel like they have to do something out of the ordinary.

Just play

your game, play to your ability, and that’s what this team needs you to do.” With that, seniors Ryan Butler and Ryan Greenleaf know a thing or two about playing their game. Both players were part of Salem’s two championship squads and return as the top two players for the team

this season. Ryan Carney is another senior for the Blue Devils this fall, while junior Kyle Gaudette has stepped up and will be a solid number three for the team to start the season. The Blue Devils have been practicing as a team since the first day of fall sports on August 16. With a regular season that began on Monday, August 30, the Blue Devils will face an accelerated playing schedule in the month of September before the season concludes with the Division 1 Championships in Keene on Saturday, October 2. Between now and then, the Blue Devils will focus on improving their scores and getting better during their 11 regular season meets. But like any other year, the season will still come down to one day. “It’s about getting ready for the tournament and seeing who plays the best on that day,” Adams said. “I feel very confident we will be well positioned going in there.”

varsity team last year, the Windham volleyball program will take it to the next level this season. The Jaguars are currently gearing up to play a full varsity schedule in Division 2 this fall. The Jaguars have been practicing for almost three weeks now and have had one scrimmage as well. On Saturday, August 21, the Jags participated in a pre-season tournament at NHTI in Concord, where they went 4-3 playing single games to 25 against their opponents. They have made a good start in the pre-season, but they will continue to focus on making improvements as the season goes on. “I am excited to start this season,”

Windham head coach Jill Bartlett said. “We have been working really hard in the pre-season on our fundamentals and excelling our game. The girls have been working well together and are creating a climate and culture for our program, thanks to a great group of girls.” The team has 11 athletes—eight juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. So far, Tess Powell is leading the team’s defense as a libero, while Kerry White is looking strong in the middle and Alex Boucher is leading the outside. The roster will be rounded out by Brittany Berman, Melissa Cino, Meghan Gosselin, Delaine Kelly, Leandra Macary, Cristi Theriault, Marcela Trocha, and Maureen Wheeler. Windham opens up its regular

season on Wednesday, September 8, at Souhegan. The team’s first home game will take place the following Friday when it hosts Laconia at 6 p.m.
