Jaguars Prepare for Division 2 Competition this Season
by Chris White It’s hard to know what to expect when you’re a first-year varsity program like the Windham
boys’ soccer team. That’s why the Jaguars are keeping their expectations pretty level, at least as they enter the new season. “We’re really excited about the opportunity,” Windham coach Mike Hachey said of his team joining Division 2 this fall. “We know it will be a challenge, but we still believe we are capable.” And why shouldn’t they believe in themselves? The Jags put together a solid season at the junior
varsity level last year, the program’s first season of competition. Sure, the senior-less Jaguars will lack size and numbers competing in their new league. However, they have a unique advantage when it comes to the fact that they will return all of their players from last season. “We’re returning all of our players from last year,” Hachey said. “They have already bonded and are already a team with everyone back, so we will have to play as more of a unit in order to do well.” The Jags will focus on building a solid team defense to have as a staple of their team. Not only will a solid defense help keep their opponents from scoring, but it will help generate offensive opportunities for the Jags as well. With its style of play, the hard work that the team puts in to prepare for each contest will be very important, Hachey noted. So far, a number of players have stepped into leadership roles for Windham as the program rises to a new level. Goalie Andrew Pesci and defenseman Mike Sheahan have led the team’s defense, while Alex Whitehead and Chris Ulbrich have stepped up in the midfield. That group plus the rest of the Jaguars will focus on developing the program to its full potential by having a strong first varsity season. “Most of all, we’re focused on getting to a better place at the end of the year,” Hachey said.
“We just want to establish the program, play the game the right way, and earn the respect of other teams.”
Pelham, Windham Open Cross Country Season
by Chris White Pelham and Windham met at Pelham High School’s 3.1-mile course to kick off the 2010 cross country season last Friday. Each program was part of a four-team meet that also featured Bedford and Hollis-Brookline.
Bedford came out on top in the boys’ race, while Hollis-Brookline took second, Pelham took third, and Windham took fourth. Pelham got some strong performances from Steve Hammar (19:24) finishing ninth, Brandon Hannon (20:12) finishing 14th, and Nate Krawczyk (20:57) finishing 20th. Casey Labonte also crossed the line at 21:04, and Jake Wormald came in at 21:08 to round out Pelham’s top five. Meanwhile, the Windham boys were led by Colby Putnam (19:53) coming in 13th, and Dan Rubery (21:56) coming in 28th. In the girls’ race, Hollis-Brookline took the top spot, Bedford came in second, Windham came in third, and Pelham came in fourth. The Pelham girls were led by Shannen Arsenault (23:57) placing 13th, Meghan Walker (25:06) placing 22nd, and Allie Lyons (25:22) falling right behind her in 23rd. Meanwhile, Windham turned in a strong top six for the race: Kate Farrell (21:02) took first, Emma Boyd (22:39) took eighth, Lindsay Maffie (24:46) took 17th, Alexis Clemons (25:59) took 24th, Sophia Panourgias (27:43) took 28th, and Mary Garside (27:59) took 31st.
Boston Cane - continued from front page Razorbacks Game Summary
submitted by Razorback Head Coach Ron Emrick Sunday, August 29: Razorbacks Fifth Grade Squad – 34, Manchester East Cobras – 0. The Razorbacks’ fifth-grade team continued its early-season winning ways with a convincing 34-0 win over the Manchester East Cobras. The Razorbacks jumped on the board early when Justin O’Connor, who received excellent blocking from teammates Ritchie Rousseau, Austin Wentzel, and Zach Debay, ran 40 yards for a TD. The Razorbacks’ defense then took over the game with its tenacious, run- stuffing play. A host of Razorbacks contributed to making life difficult for the Cobras offense, including Tyler Mercier, Diggy Lawson, Anthony Suppa, Chris Barsalou, and Brian Murzda. The scoring continued for the Razorbacks when Austin Chausse, Joey “Cheech” Micciche, Jack Moro, Royce Belsky and Tyler Folsom opened a big hole up front that allowed Brandon O’Grady to run 55 yards for a TD. QB Tyler Longo threw an excellent pass to Folsom in the end zone to convert the extra point and cap a quick, two- play scoring drive. Debay, Lawson, and Longo all contributed to the scoring for the Razorbacks with TD runs. The Razorbacks’ aggressive and physical offensive line play was led by Robert Ryan, Jake Kirane, Nick Psareas, and Kameron Priestley. The Razorbacks will travel to Derry to meet the Demons on September 12.
