by Maureen Gillum The Alvirne varsity and JV girls’ soccer teams are off to a season of great promise. Surprisingly, one of their biggest team builders is off the pitch entirely. The girls collectively decided to hold a car wash at the AHS parking lot on September 11 as a team fundraiser, but they were also looking for something “more” to help others. “We needed to work together to support our team, but we also wanted to do more to give back and help round us out as better citizens,” shared Kaelyn Babin, an Alvirne senior and girls’ varsity soccer co-captain. Fortunately, “more,” by way of Paul Moore – notably a 1975 Alvirne alumni and halfback for the AHS boys’ 1973 New England Soccer Championship team – was close by with a few ideas, including a fall soccer ball drive via MooreMart to “serve soldiers and children worldwide.” “If you had told me five years ago that we’d be sending a thousand care packages, never mind

27,000 to the Middle East, I never would have guessed it,” humbly shared MooreMart founder Paul Moore. He also reported that they have sent more than 3,200 soccer balls, which have been “very popular and warmly received.” MooreMart (www.mooremart.org) began as

Nashua Attorney Paul Moore and his family began sending packages to support their brother, Brian, a New Hampshire National Guard Staff Sergeant stationed in Iraq in 2003. Since then, the non- profit, dubbed “MooreMart” by its “members,” has grown to become a major community-wide effort, shipping up to 500 packages with “a few comforts of home” to American troops stationed overseas every six to eight weeks. To date, the group has shipped 27,029 care packages to U.S. soldiers deployed in the Middle East and children in the area, thanks to the help of many generous sponsors and community volunteers. Next is their Fall Halloween Care packages and soccer ball drive that will be shipped late September. Enter the Alvirne girls’ soccer teams. “MooreMart’s fall soccer ball

drive seemed like a natural fit for our soccer teams and a good opportunity to be more involved in our community,” explained Emily Gosselin, AHS senior and girls’ varsity soccer co-captain. Gosselin thoughtfully added, “We also felt pretty lucky simply to be able to play soccer and pursue

our education, unlike so many young women in the Middle East.” “The community has given a lot to us as a team and this is one small way of saying thank you for their support,” emphasized AHS girls’ varsity soccer coach Lance McAdam. His players were also among the hundreds of enthusiastic participants in the Zach Attack 5K last Friday as another way to build team and community spirit. So, along with getting a great, free car wash (with donations gratefully accepted) in the Alvirne parking lot on Saturday, September 11 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to help support Alvirne girls’ soccer,

the team will also be collecting new soccer ball donations (any size, deflated or inflated, pumps and needles also appreciated) for MooreMart’s fall soccer drive. Please stop by to support our AHS Broncos and U.S. military. Incidentally, while Moore hopes to be back at Alvirne on September 11, he will likely be busy at Manchester’s Verizon Center at a deployment ceremony honoring about 1,000 New Hampshire National Guard servicemen and women. “This will be the NH National Guard’s largest deployment since World War II,” cited Moore.

Campbell Girls’ Soccer Returns Experienced Squad

by Chris White After advancing to the Class M girls’ soccer final last year, the Campbell Cougars return a strong nucleus of players for the 2010 season. The Cougars have nine players returning from last year’s starting line-up and are focused on making another run well into the post-season this year. With last year’s success, the Cougars have certainly raised their expectations entering their first season in Division 3. But they also can’t avoid the fact that they won’t be taken lightly by many of their opponents this season. “We definitely have a bulls-eye on our

back,” Campbell head coach Bob Gannon said. “We just have to play our style of

soccer and not panic.” Campbell’s playing style will rely mostly on a strong team defense. Not only will the Cougars try to shut down teams with their defense, but their ability to defend will also play a large role in generating their offense by creating opportunities. The Cougars will emphasize consistency at the defensive end, as they focus on preventing breakdowns that could allow big plays for their opponents. The team will sport 10 seniors, three of

whom will be captains: Shannon Savard, Shawna Trunca, and Courtney Gannon. Included in the senior crew is goalie Hayden Leith, who has shown much improvement in her return this season. She

will be accompanied by Heather Baron, whose skill and experience will give the team depth at the goalkeeper position. In addition to the returning

upperclassmen, there’s a group of promising freshmen entering the program as well. It will be interesting to how the upperclassmen and the younger players come together as a team, Gannon said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the

younger players deal with playing up in high school and seeing how the leadership on the team pulls them in,” Gannon said. “The girls have learned to play better as a team. They are really coming together as a program and supporting each other.”
