Creating a Legacy DuBois prints now available with proceeds going toward art scholarships A Old Grist Mill
native of the Black Hills, Richard DuBois, Class of '64, and retired associate art professor from BHSU, has created exquisite watercolor Giclee' prints for sale with all of the proceeds going toward art scholar- ships at Black Hills State University. Richard is the co-founder of the Northern Plains Watercolor Society and has served on the Board of Directors since it's inception in 1993. In addition to his studio work, he participates in and conducts pro- fessional workshops in watercolor. He has been in numerous group and solo exhibitions and has juried com- petitions and invitational shows. His work is in permanent col- lections throughout the United States and is represented by galleries in the Midwest.

he following scholarship endowments were recently established at Black Hills State University thanks to the generosity of the following individuals and their families.
Scholarships continue to be paramount for students attending BHSU. Meeker praised these families for their dedication to BHSU students and noted that the university is grateful for their contribu- tions that will create opportunities for future students.
•The Fidler Family Theatre Scholarship
fund was established with a $10,000 gift from Nadine Fidler. Proceeds from the gift will be used to fund theatre scholarships for BHSU students. Nadine previously donated funds to create music scholarships. “When my husband and I came to Spearfish many years ago to establish a business, we were both delighted to discover the excellent music and theatre events at BHSU. We enjoyed attending concerts and plays throughout the years,” Nadine says.
•The Mae and Chester Garrett Scholarship was established with a $10,000
gift from the Garrett family. The gift will be used to fund visual arts scholarships for BHSU students. The family designated that preference will be given to students from the Sturgis area and then all of western South Dakota. Mae Garrett graduated from BHSU in 1949 and taught school for many years. •The Bruce Page Hultgren Scholarship was recently supple- mented with a $25,000 bequeath by Loyd and Elnora Hultgren’s estate. This is in addition to the gift annuity, which provided the donors with interest income for life, that they previously established. The scholar- ships support full-time junior or senior students pursuing an instrumental music degree. Their total endowment is now over $28,000. One $500 scholarship will be awarded annually through 2010-2011 in memory of Steven. Recipients must be a junior or senior majoring in math at Black Hills State University. Preference will be given to students from western South Dakota. Steven, who graduated summa cum laude from BHSU in 1985, joined the Chadron State College faculty after spending six years working on his doctorate and serving as a teaching assistant at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He lived the first 10 years of his life in the Twin Cities of Minnesota before his family moved to Spearfish. Haataja earned a master’s degree from UNL in 1987 and was a teaching assistant there until 1991. During the next two years, he taught math at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He then spent the next 6 ½ years working in technical support and training for a Sioux Falls computer firm before beginning work on his doctorate. Black Hills State University Alumni Magazine Page 23
was a musician. He was a bass trombone player who worked with big bands such as Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and others. He died of acute leukemia in 1988 at the age of 38.
