I have spent the past 15 years of my life working in IT and software design. Since my more recent involvement in the world of handmade, I have realised that designer/makers are one of the most intensive user communities of the internet. The way that designer/makers use online resources means that certain aspects of emerging technologies are highly relevant. In this article we’ll take a look at your digital identity. But what exactly does this mean?


It is fast becoming a reality that as human beings, we now reside in a dual world: the real world and the digital world. In the real world, our identities are represented in a myriad of different ways; some of them based on our evolutionary history, such as facial recognition systems - others are paper representations of

us, such as a passport, driving license, etc. A digital identity needs to mimic the methods by which we recognise human beings in the real world – but using digitised technology.


Technologists have been working on the creation of digital identities for many years now. Until fairly recently, the best version of a digital identity was either a biometric trace, or a digital certificate. Both of these methods had inherent problems. For example, biometric devices have hardware barriers which make them costly to create, and digital certificates have usability issues for end users, especially for online transactions. What technologists recognised was that the world needed a digital identity that carried with it the credentials of person, i.e. identifying factors. These
