For those of you thinking about taking up a creative career, here’s some advice from those who have.

• Follow your dream and keep an open mind.

• Get to grips with any legal requirements around your product.

• Research your idea before you jump in and do it.

• Work hard, be positive and follow your heart.

• Learn everything you can, try everything you can and just do it.

• Know the mechanics of running your business – budgets and costings, planning, sourcing, selling and branding.

• Get your pricing right and cost your time realistically.

• Talk to other creative people and learn from them.

• Find the thing that you love to do and then don’t look back and give it your all. • Just go for it and believe you can do it!

a freelance assessor and training administrator in her former life, is always on duty. “I go to bed most nights with loads of things ’running around in my head’…it’s hard to switch off when you are solely responsible for the success of your venture.”

ride these

challenges present, not one of the people interviewed had any regrets about their decision to pursue their own creative business. This is a one way ticket to a more fulfilling life. But is there a place in the market for all these new business? Apparently yes; according

to a recent report by the Craft Council, craft spending is holding up better than spending on designer or branded goods and the market trend is to buy more handmade, unique, original work. So what are you waiting for?!

My own advice is to remember that the fear of doing something is usually worse than the reality. So don’t live your life governed by fears – imagine instead what your life would be like if it was governed by your dreams.
