printing business selling greyhound- inspired designs. When asked if she has any regrets about leaving her medical career behind, Jane says “I’d rather have my health and happiness and love what I do, than work myself into the ground in a job I hate just for the money.”

www.notjusthandbags.co.uk was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of just 25. The combination of this and the fact that her part-time police job was getting more stressful, helped her start her own business of designing and making handbags. Susan Morris of: www.folksy.com/shops/DiomoGlass

has a similar story. Having been diagnosed with ME, Susan worked part-time in a book shop before taking a course in stained glass making. Clearly enjoying the control she now has over her life she says, “I now have the freedom to work when I feel like it, to make what I want”.

Hannah Wiltshire of: www.thisisyourkingdom.co.uk saw the writing on the wall when she was a corporate lawyer in a London city firm and took voluntary redundancy in June 2009. “I saw this as an opportunity to be grasped with both hands – a chance to do something on my own, change my lifestyle and generally try and do some good”, explains Hannah. She now runs a website and e-newsletter service
