the middle of the butternut squash as possible. 6. Wash the butternut squash and dry it with some paper towels or a hand towel as it can become quite slippery which can be dangerous when using a scalpel or a drill. 7. Use the apple corer to make large holes at the top of the butternut squash. These are necessary so the heat can escape when the squash is

placed over a candle at the end. You can make these heat escape holes into a design feature adding smaller holes around them.

8. Use the scalpel and skewer or drill to etch the design into the squash. I used a small craft drill and carved the vines and leaves into the skin, taking care not to go all of the way through. 9. Use the scalpel and skewer or the drill to pierce all of the way through the design. If you opt for the scalpel and skewer you can use the scalpel to pierce through the vines and leaves and the skewer to pierce through

the dots. 10. Once you have finished piercing, rinse the butternut squash to get rid of any fleshy bits and dry thoroughly. 11. Place the squash over a lit tea light candle on a fireproof surface and hey presto you have a butternut squash lantern. You could also experiment with different sized drill bits, making lace-like patterns. See end of magazine for template
