thegreenmoleforum For a sustainable Mole Valley

‘Everyday Organic’ is the theme for this year’s Soil Association ‘Organic Fortnight’ held this month, encouraging people to try something organic daily.

Reasons to choose organic – controversial additives (eg. aspartame, tartrazine, MSG), pesticide use and genetic modification are banned, better animal welfare with a free- range lifestyle, and plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

If you intend to grow organically, you might like to seek advice from the Surrey Organic Gardening Group (SOGG), a collection of people who enjoy many aspects of gardens and gardening. They hold regular monthly meetings, often with guest speakers, and arrange group visits to public gardens and other places of interest.

The One Pot Pledge® aims to

get 30,000 people who’ve never grown anything before giving it a go. One pot on a window ledge is all you need to get started. Do sign up!

Talking of biodiversity, Transition Bookham is continuing its work on St Nicolas Pastoral Centre’s garden, with a ‘bug hotel’ being the latest addition! Do help out if you can. As well as their open meeting, last month, they held their first social at the Windsor.

If you’re intending to buy a new registration car, it might be worth holding off... the US military is forecasting oil shortages in a few years time!

You could always wait for an air powered car – Tata Motors of India is launching one soon, there’s the human power HumanCar® due 2011 or, if you’re keen, you can modify your existing one to run on water, following instructions to be found on the internet!

Thinking of running a vehicle on biofuels? An EU report reveals that crops grown for fuel produce more CO2

pollution than fossil

fuels. Increased demand for soy, sugar cane and beat, palm oil and rapeseed leads to imports of other food crops and more land use, often through deforestation.

Of course there are other ways to get around and European Mobility Week aims to encourage these, culminating in International Car Free Day, Wednesday 22 .
