A Gathering of Minds!

it’s new home within the Nuremberg Ex- hibition Centre, Germany, commencing on the 2nd of October. Both exhibitions are previewed in part in this issue as well as extended comment by EMAP Con- nect’s event director, Roz McGuiness on steps the company is taking to attract new exhibitors and visitors to Spring Fair International in February 2011. There can be little doubt that one of the most peculiar if not disturbing series of images of the last few months is that presented by Kingston Univer- sity’s Graphic Design and Photographic students Anna Brooks and Samantha Harvey. Apparently they visited a local school hoping to take photographs of some of the children. It transpired they were not allowed to take shots of children’s faces but were allowed to take those of the back of their heads. The result is a comment on the paranoia surrounding pictures of children; a series of traditional class photographs in which every child is facing away from the camera, so only the teacher’s smiling face can be seen! Other news items during the summer months, which are historically devoid of said subject matter, include the demise of The Art Group and their almost instantaneous rebirth via the auspices of Pyramid International, Hahnemühle Fine Art’s relocation in Norwich and the National Gallery’s close examination of Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries, an exhibition which runs in the Sainsbury wing until the 12th of September. Features in this month’s edition include

information on the latest releases in ‘Wildlife Art’ plus market comment from the originators and publishers in the fi eld, or perhaps the ‘plain’ may appear more appropriate, whereas the workshop section concentrates on the necessary choices of frame and mould- ings and again developments within the market.
When it comes to interviews, Printer,
Publisher, Framer and Retailer, Collier & Dobson don’t hold back one iota on how they view the market and their ascendant position within it! They’re on a roll and they know it, but it is the ‘how’ and the ‘wherefore’ rather than the ‘why’ which is so informative! This duo enthuse success and therefore it is not

surprising that they have drawn rapid industry attention! Another interview to excite is that with gallery owner Ian Morris of Chalfont Art and Framing. Starting-up almost as recession was about to shatter many a dream could not have been easy, how- ever Ian was no slouch when it came to promoting his new business. Not want- ing to give too much away he said: “It’s very obvious that some galleries do talk to each other, some galleries don’t talk to each other and some galleries will tell you the exact opposite of what they’re really doing.” Thankfully, Ian does tell how he’s do-
ing, he does hint how he’s doing it but he doesn’t name names and it’s up to you to determine the accuracy of the road he’s travelling! This issues framing interview is with
Steven McKee, who is owner of the Dromore Picture Framing Business, The Down School of Picture Framing and is an Advanced Guild Commended Framer. He also runs the Valiani Dem- onstration Centre for Northern Ireland and Ireland and is a member of the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Framers Committee and, he says, “Attained all three of the FATG’s GCF Advanced Qualifi cations and was the fi rst person so to do.” This is something that he is very proud of and encourages other framers to study for and take the exam. In the interview he talks openly about his early days in the industry, the achievements gleaned over the years and the off ers avail- able to the would-be framer in today’s marketplace. Add to this information on the latest
releases, workshop news, the regular columns of Brian wolf, Tony Hayton and Dave Woolass plus industry comment on how gallery owners and framers view the future of trade fairs and you have a mix of information second to none!
I leave you as ever with art in words. This work is entitled ‘Praise’.
Praise Her breasts were hard on my arm And her words soft on my neck, she A woman of such mixed emotions and me,
A man of so simple a worship. ‘Thou shall not have any base idol’, Oh but I do!

The front cover shows ‘Leopard Watch’, one of a pair of new limited editions from Rolf Harris CBE, published by DeMontfort Fine Art this autumn. With his recent release of an 80th birthday celebration collection ‘A Life in Art’, his numerous TV appearances and his superstar status at Glastonbury, Rolf is rarely out of the limelight nowadays. This stunning image will be on show at DeMontfort’s Premier Collection event, September 5th-8th at DeMontfort House.
