Spotlight on... PONTCANNA

Tis issue we headed to Pontcanna, the leafy suburb with a Bohemian feel in the western district of Cardiff. On a rather blustery weekend we happily took salvation in the eclectic collection of cafes, restaurants and shops that the area boasts to find out just why it is Cardiff’s celebrity hotspot!

Pontcanna (“Pont” Welsh for bridge and Saint “Canna” - the 6th century Mother of the Saints) has gained its reputation as a media hub, frequented by TV personalities, directors and creatives. A coveted address with a stunning array of period proper ties, it is just a 15 minute walk to the city centre.

Period Pads Once par t of the Riverside area, Pontcanna really gained an identity of its own in the late 1800s. The land was composed of farmhouses and cottages, and the remains of this rather tranquil past is still visible to this day. This attractive environment encouraged developers to build splendid houses in the Cathedral Road area and with the exception of newer proper ties, very little has changed in Pontcanna since the 1800s: beautiful Victorian terraced houses and huge detached proper ties stand majestically in their surroundings.
