he five-year member survey is now available for resident adult and intermediate members either online at theMAC. com or at the Concierge Desk. I hope you already have filled it out. This is one of the most impor- tant ways for members to communicate to the Board of Trustees, and to the committees, their thoughts on how the club is currently run and what changes should be made in the future. We want your input! Last time, 63 percent

of you filled out the questionnaire. While we are told this is more than the average club, we didn’t hear from 4,800 members. Many decisions, both strategically and day-to-day, are based upon the input you give us. The survey has been developed by a specially selected committee of members who have extensive knowledge of the operations of the club. Under the leadership of Grant Yoshihara, the committee (comprised of Ann Blume, John Bradley, John Carr, Lisa Girard, Darcy Henderson, Scott Sakamoto, Roger Swanson and Patty Thompson) worked hard to cover all the issues confronting the club.
While the 117 questions give a statistically valid picture of your opinions, the opportuni- ties to comment give us the details behind your opinions. For example, if you indicate you would
like more healthy choices on the restaurant menus, tell us which restaurants and what healthy means to you. Is it vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, low salt, low sugar, low fat, and/or low calorie? We need to correctly identify the details.
In the athletic area, we often hear
comments about the need for more exercise classes. So be specific as to which class and at what times. Positive comments are just as useful in giving us direction as are negative comments. Often members who are happy with some aspect of the club are silent, while those who are unhappy are vocal. Your opportunity to participate ends Friday,
Sept. 17. Members who complete the survey are eligible to win prizes; those who complete the survey early have more chances to win. Survey results become available in late
October. I plan to discuss overall impressions from the board’s perspective and also some of the finer points of the survey results at the Annual Meeting in February.
Strategic Planning There is an excellent synopsis of the newly
developed Strategic Plan on pages 16-17of this month’s Winged M. Written by two past chairs of the Strategic Planning Committee, Julie Vigeland and Grant Yoshihara, the article lays out the overall initiatives (I think of them as our major goals to be achieved) approved by the board. These initiatives focus the board, the committees and management on the important areas to keep this club relevant, competitive, and an important part of your life. The plan is intended to guide us for the
next five years. The board already has begun to implement the early steps in the plan. The previously described survey is an important first step. Members of the Strategic Planning Committee have been presenting the plan to each of the major committees. The plan should be required reading for anyone who wants to serve in the committee system. If you have comments on the plan, send them to the committee at
strategicplan@themac.com.
Parking etiquette
I felt your pain during the restriping of the Parking Structure. I lost my parking spot for a day and had to wind around to find a spot. Now that the lines are clear and the lighting is better, please park between the two interior lines. Security will remind you if you don’t.
MAC history Last month’s MAC history question was,
“What illegal activity helped support the club during the late ’30s and ’40s?” The answer: slot machines. I have it on good authority that when Phase II of the club was started in 1972, the slot machines were distributed to the board and general manager. If you have further infor- mation, let me know.
This month the history question has a strategic plan and member survey aspect to it. Throughout MAC’s 119 years, many sports have come and gone. Gymnastics is the only team sport to survive the whole time. For dinner for two with me, be the first to name 10 sports that no longer have a competitive team at MAC. Send your answer to board@themac. com. WM
