MAC Triathletes Compete in Budapest B

ridget Dawson, MAC triathlon coach, and Lauren Binder, MAC athletic

member, represent MAC and team USA at this year’s Age Group World Triathlon Championship in Budapest, Hungary, Wednesday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 12.

Both women are competing in the Olympic Triathlon distance, which is comprised of a 1.5 K swim, 40 K bike, and a 10 K run. Both Binder and Dawson have been in the top of their age group for USA triathlon for many years, and competed last September in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to win a spot on team USA.

Binder joined MAC as an athletic member in January 2010, and brought with her a 2009 world age group cham- pionship gold medal, a silver medal from 2008, and a bronze medal from 2007. Last year in Gold Coast, Australia, Binder won her age group by more than five minutes.

After competing in Budapest, she heads back to Tuscaloosa to defend her national Olympic age group triathlon champion- ship from 2009.

Dawson started at MAC as an athletic member in 2008 and moved into the role of MAC triathlon coach in the fall of 2009. This is her second trip to the Age Group World Triathlon Championship. Her first trip was in 2008 to Vancouver, BC; unfortunately, due to weather, they had to cancel the swim portion. Dawson just returned from winning her age group at the competitive Hy-Vee triathlon in Iowa. She won overall in her age group, and also had the fastest swim split, bike split, and run split in her age group. Dawson and Binder, along with MAC triathlon member Coach Linnea Alvord and athletic member Eric Helser, play a key role in the MAC triathlon program. They work together to support swim work-

outs, offer group bike rides and runs, and provide essential triathlon clinics geared toward first-time triathletes. This year more than 25 MAC members participated in the Blue Lake Triathlon in June, with many members competing in their first triathlon.

Pittock Run

The next running event is the Pittock Fun Run and Social Tuesday, Sept. 14. This is an eight-mile loop on the trails and a great workout for those who are training for fall races. There are alternative, shorter options for those who want to drive to the top of Pittock Mansion and enjoy the downhill terrain. Runners should meet in the Turnaround at 5:30 p.m.
