Learn the Importance of Full, Deep Breaths

B

reath equals life. People take their breathing for granted, but if they were

asked to hold their breath for more than a minute most would be left gasping. Instead of breathing full, deep breaths,

people tend to breathe fast and shallow as if they were in their worst nightmare. The use of only a fraction of the lungs results in a lack of oxygen and can lead to serious health complications throughout the years. Heart diseases, sleep disorders, and fatigue are some of the effects of oxygen starvation. By practicing deep and systematic breathing, people reenergize their body and mind. One of the limbs of yoga is called

Pranayama (prah-nah-yah-mah), a science that emphasizes breathing techniques or breath control. From a yogic point of view, proper breathing brings more oxygen to the blood and to the brain, reducing the complications of oxygen deprivation and also to control Prana, or the vital life energy. Conscious sustained attention on the breath helps to identify subtle areas in the mind and body that humans tend to contract, and helps to release them from their “root.” Yoga breathing, or Pranayama, not only builds up breath capacity but revitalizes the body, steadies the emotions and creates great clarity of mind.

Professional, Impeccable Service Proven Results

An upcoming introductory series, guided by yoga instructor and Ayurvedic practi- tioner Kimmie Brunke, enhances students’ understanding of the breath and their own vital life force through various breathing techniques. Throughout the six-week series, students learn how to reestablish a healthy relationship with their breath; learn new breath techniques and the benefits of each technique; learn basic anatomy and physi- ology of the breath; and discover ways to sustain the practice comfortably for long periods of time.

The series meets Tuesdays beginning

Sept. 14 from 8-8:45 a.m. in Studio II and is open to all levels. Although participants are encouraged to come for the full series to obtain the maximum benefit from the prac- tice, the series is open to drop-in students as well. The cost for the full series is $50. The drop-in fee is $10. For more information or to register, visit theMAC.com or call Lisa Bergstrom at 503-223-6251, ext. 540. WM
