Martha, Richard, Donald and George; and eight grandchildren. Thomas J. Holce died July 14. He was a


senior family preferred member who joined the club in 1994. Holce was born in Mist in 1929. In his early years, he founded Holce Logging with his brother, Wilfred. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 as a ground electronics commu- nications specialist. He went on to earn his degree from Pacific University, and ultimately instructed there. He married Joyce New in 1948; she died in 1992. He later married Gretchen Griffin.


Holce was a philanthropist and was involved with many institutions and organi- zations, including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Boys and Girls Aid Society, Portland Art Museum, Trillium Family Services, Marylhurst University, and New Avenues for Youth. The Association of Fundraising Professionals named him philanthropist of the year in 2001. He was an accomplished inventor, and had 20 patents to his name. Holce served as chairman of the Portland


Art Museum and Pacific University. He sat on the boards of more than 20 other companies, organizations and institutions. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum, and the high-tech exec- utive of the year award from the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife; sister, Irene


Jones; half-brother, Robert Mathews; son, Kent; daughter, Tonya Holce-Owens; stepsons, Mark and Ryan Griffin; stepdaughter, Heidi Griffin; and seven grandchildren.
