AD M INI STRAT IV E Faces in the Club
Thirteen-year-old Bailey Pearson, left, and 12-year-old Tristan Furnary began their swimming careers with MAC developmental squad and are now two of the top swimmers, in their respective age groups, in the Northwest. At the recent 11-and-over champion- ships, Pearson took first place in five of his six events (with a second place in the sixth event), while also setting a new meet record in the 200 backstroke and 800 freestyle. Furnary won five out of six events as well (and finished second in the 50 butterfly), while setting a new state record in the 50 backstroke. Pearson, an eighth grader at West Sylvan Middle School, and Furnary, a seventh grader at OES, were both selected for the Oregon Zone team. The team is comprised of 60 of the top 11-and-older athletes in the state.

Nels Carlson joined the club as a member coach in April. Carlson is a physical medicine and rehabilita- tion (PMR) specialist in the department of orthopedics and reha- bilitation at OHSU. The specialty of PMR treats a wide range of medical issues, from spinal cord injuries to sports inju- ries. Carlson’s practice is focused primarily on non- operative musculoskeletal complaints such as knee and shoulder injuries and osteoarthritis. Carlson’s clinical goal is to help patients return to activities that they may be avoiding due to pain, impaired function or decondi- tioning. Carlson speaks at the Fall Fitness Challenge kickoff lecture Tuesday, Sept. 14 (see page 38).
Zoe Chrisman-Miller, along with two fellow Franklin High School students, built an award- winning windmill for a national engineering competition. The team took third place in the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement competition in Denver in June. The competi- tion brought together seven groups of students who had won their state contests. This win was the first time an Oregon high school team placed in the top three in nationals since the state began competing about 10 years ago. Chrisman-Miller is a 2010 MAC Scholar Athlete. She has played soccer and run track for Franklin, and has served as the news editor of the school newspaper.
Dan Lavey was recently named president of Gallatin Public Affairs, a regional, bipartisan public affairs firm. Lavey had been a company share- holder and partner since 2001, and has provided strategic counsel to busi- nesses, elected officials and political candidates for the past 15 years. From 1992 through 2008, he served as top advisor to U.S. Senator Gordon Smith. A native Oregonian, Lavey earned a bachelor’s degree in history from University of Oregon. He currently serves on the board of directors for Pioneer Courthouse Square, University of Oregon Alumni Association and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland.
Kent Metcalf and his friend Brooks Thompson decided to start their own business shortly after their graduation from University of Oregon. For the past nine months, the two have been developing Double Decker PDX, a charter/limousine service that features a two-story bus. The company provides transportation to a variety of locations, and also rents out the bus on an hourly basis for special events. Portlanders can rent a double-decker bus for organized wine tours, or can sign up for a college football or basket- ball package. Outside of work, Metcalf can be seen at MAC playing tennis, working out, or meeting friends in the Sports Pub.
Brooks Thompson, with friend Kent Metcalf, is working to make sure Double Decker PDX is as “green” as possible. The double-decker bus runs bio diesel, and the company tries to offset all of its emissions by planting trees. This year alone, the company has planted 500 trees. Thompson and Metcalf first met as students at Lincoln High School and have been in business together for nearly 10 years; the two previously owned TM Endeavors. Thompson has been a MAC member for most of his life, and played racquetball for the club when he was younger. He now uses the club for workouts and catching up with friends.
