DUNLOP AEROGEL 4D EVOLUTION 120
day out, but those now-or-never occasions, those few weeks, that day, that match, when you must find your best or be forever disappointed.
His victories over the past twelve months, including one of the longest and arguably the greatest British Open finals in history, confounded anyone who had him down as a mere ‘retriever’, someone who could win only by doing the hard yards.
Jonah Barrington, Britain’s most successful player, believes that people from inside and outside of the sport should sit up and take notice of Matthew’s “incredible achievements”.
Barrington, who won six British Open titles between 1967 and 1973 to be recognised as the sport’s most charismatic celebratory, said: “Nick is simply a genuine World No.1 – there’s no doubt about that.
“He has arrived right at the forefront of the sport on a world level. And as far as British performances go, he is now right at the top of the pile.
“He is someone who treats every point like match point and as if his life depends on it. That’s what makes him so difficult to play.”
Matthew’s goal this year is to add the British Grand Prix in Manchester, World Open and Commonwealth Gold to his status as the world’s best player and Barrington believes he is more than capable.
“To my mind he is the favourite already to win the World Open this year due to momentum being carried forward.
“The pressure won’t affect him and I think you will find there will be a further response from him.”
So what does the World No.1 expect from himself? Matthew’s vision is simple, “to keep it for as long as possible.”
“To get to World No.1 is massive, but to strive on and achieve more success is the benchmark,” said Matthew. “It is what all of the great players have done and I will be looking to set out the building blocks to that path.”
In an ever-increasing and hectic season it will be rare to be able to reflect on or savour any triumph other than the most recent, and so after a well deserved summer break it is back to desire, back to intensity and to seeking ways to use both those things to work for him and not against him.
Nick Matthew will next compete in England at the ROWE British Grand Prix, Europe’s leading world tour event, which will be staged in Manchester from 15th – 20th September.
