our town community LISTENING AND LEARNING AT CLARK ELEMENTARY’S IPOD CAFÉ
While many schools are fighting the battle of portable electronics drawing attention away from learning in the classroom, one Charlottesville school has embraced the idea of iPods in class. Last spring, fourth- grade students at Clark Elementary School had the opportunity to use iPods to guide their own learning.
by Eric M. Stauffer
The project evolved through collaboration among instructional technologists, media specialists and classroom teachers, and is based on the premise that the 21st-century classroom is less a place of stand- and-deliver instruction, and more a place where students make decisions about their own learning.
In the run-up to last spring’s Standards of Learning assessments, teachers at Clark selected hundreds of developmentally
appropriate reading and math movies and pre-loaded them onto video iPods for students to use at lunch. Students were then “certified” on proper use and care of the iPods and were given the choice to use the iPods at lunch each day in the “iPod Café.” Students were excited about getting to watch movies on the iPods — and at the same time, they were becoming self-directed learners. During the project, students began to reflect critically on what they had learned from classroom instruction, and the movies inspired them to ask teachers for more videos on topics they enjoyed, as well as to question their existing knowledge. This friendly and familiar medium not only allowed students to gain understanding in the content area, but also contributed to their development of initiative, self-monitoring and critical reflection.

The iPod Café
project was such a success at Clark that
other elementary schools in Charlottesville are hoping to borrow the idea this fall.

“Buying a car from Edgecomb’s is more like hanging out with friends than transacting business. I totaled my 1994 Volvo 940 one day and two days later I was on the road in a 2000 Volvo V70. My experience was both excellent and entertaining as well as totally professional where it matters most.” Tom and Ted Kitchen
