FROM PB&J TO COOKING SCHOOL
The PB&J Fund got a group of 11 fourth to sixth grade kids together this summer for a cooking class with one rule: Have fun! The kids were each given their own chef’s kit of supplies for the kitchen, including measuring cups and potholders. (Photos and recipes can be found at pbandjfund. org/blog.) They are sure to be having a lot more fun in the future, since this summer’s Restaurant Week chose PB&J as its benefiting charity, with $1 of every $26 prix fixe meal going to them. The PB&J Fund has programming in the city public schools and they work with Children, Youth and Family Services and the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottesville/Albemarle.
AREA TEACHERS WON $15,000 IN GRANTS
Charlottesville and Albemarle County teachers won $15,000 in grants for the 2010-2011 school year. On August 20, The Edgar and Eleanor Shannon Foundation for Excellence in Public Education awarded 21 innovative proposals submitted by local teachers. Of those selected for funding, eight went to Charlottesville City Public School teachers and 13 went to Albemarle County Public School teachers. Each winning grant reflected a commitment to creative and effective teaching. Go teachers!
PREPARING FOR HARVEST
The Buford Schoolyard Garden is a learning environment where students explore the connections between food, health and the environment through hands-on activities that are integrated into their curriculum. The garden, started this spring as a student- and volunteer-tended green space, will grow food through sustainable farming practices. The students have already harvested “school-grown” strawberries and made them into strawberry ice cream on the last day of school. The garden currently grows everything from flowers to herbs to vegetables, and students are preparing for the fall harvest. If you want to see more spectacular photos of the flower and food Fall harvest at the Buford Schoolyard Garden, visit their website,
