letter from Jen Laugh. Learn. Share. Belong. These are the words we’ve chosen to describe
afVillage, our new Facebook community. Whether it is give-and-take on discipline issues, swapping recommendations for professionals to help around the house, sharing “one of those days” stories or sending in fun photos (enter to win prizes this month with your favorite Halloween costume ideas), your participation is valued. The African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” certainly rings true this
time of year. Dedicated teachers fill classrooms, volunteer coaches are on the field with soccer teams, neighbors share their garden bounty and, the most beloved help of all, carpools, are forming. I would have been in a pickle last week without my friend, Tracy, who not only drove my oldest child to an activity so the boys could finish naps, but also gracefully overlooked my housecleaning ensemble of pink polka-dotted pajama bottoms and an old DMB T-shirt. My village is pretty awesome! It takes a village to support local businesses, too. At Ivy Publications, we work
every day to connect our community’s small businesses to the countless families who need their products and services. Hundreds of local businesses open their hearts — and the valuable real estate of their shop counters, lobbies and store windows — to proudly display our publications. Although not locally owned, for several years Sam’s Club has welcomed the voice of local publications through paid rack rentals. Sadly though, they have eliminated all free community papers and joined the many big-box stores who do not welcome the voice of their community. The tidy distribution rack in the exit foyer is now gone and, with it, the local connection Sam’s had to Charlottesville residents. We hope that, if you were one of our many readers who enjoyed picking up AlbemarleFamily at Sam’s, you will ask the store manager to reconsider. Encourage them to support Charlottesville’s small businesses and the community voice found in local publications. Whether you’re volunteering at school, cheering the Women’s Four-Miler
runners, supervising the bus stop or supporting a local business, our village is strongest when we work together.
Have a wonderful September,
