by Chris White This year, the Campbell volleyball team features a young squad that will continue to work toward its ultimate goal of winning a Division 3 championship. To get there, the team will continue to build on its strengths and improve its weaknesses. “We have a young team, so it will be about how

we play in a system,” second-year head coach Colin Walker said. “Our defense is what we’re trying to build up. If we can work on our hitting and passing, we should be able to improve.” Trying to build from last year would not be a bad start. Campbell made the playoffs as a lower seed, but was knocked out in the first round by

on Friday, September 10. The Cougars will also look forward to facing teams that moved down from higher divisions this season, such as Trinity (from Division 1) and Fall Mountain (from Division 2). The team will be led by seniors Haley Bowen, Erin McLaughlin, and Renatta Landrau. Bowen will captain the squad and be the centerpiece of the offense as the team’s middle hitter. Meanwhile, McLaughlin will play the libero and defensive specialist positions after sitting out last season. She is determined to make the most of her senior year in 2010. Also, Landrau, a great team player, will contribute in any way she can through playing the outside, opposite, and middle positions. Campbell’s junior class features a couple of smart players and strong defenders in Sam Radcliffe and Meghan Sweeney. Both will play the outside hitter position. Laura Wittick also joins the team as a defensive specialist in her first year on varsity. For the team’s sophomores, Jayla Brennen will return for

her second season on varsity as a middle hitter/ opposite, while Janelle Psaledas (setter), Meaghan Dyer (libero/defensive specialist), and Jamie Carty (libero/defensive specialist) will step up to varsity this year. Campbell also has two freshmen – setter Brianna Hardy and middle/opposite Alex Travains

– who should provide depth to the team as well. The program also sports a new assistant/junior

varsity coach in Amanda Dzioba, who recently graduated from Southern New Hampshire University after playing volleyball for four years there.

AHS Football Shoots for the State Title

by Sue LaRoche Head Coach Bob Nimblett, in his

seventh year coaching at Alvirne High School, is looking for his football squad to meet and exceed the finish of last year’s squad. The Broncos finished 5-5 overall and 4-4 in their division, making it to the Division 2 playoffs, but suffered a disappointing loss in the first round. “We want to be in a state championship

game,” explained Nimblett. Coach Nimblett is counting on senior leaders, including team Captain Ryan Vigeant, along with contributions from his younger players in order to have a successful season. With the loss of several key players, including Division 2 all-state all-stars Nick Goldsack, Jeremy Baker, and Derek Janko, the Broncos will have some big shoes to fill. With 76 players attending varsity practices and 35 freshmen players, he hopes to have some emerging stars that will provide a spark for the Broncos. Playing in Division 2, the Broncos

will tackle their usual foes and this year, Manchester West will join them. Exeter will bump up to Division 1 and the Broncos will play “crossover games” against Manchester Central and Pelham. Coach Nimblett feels that “In order for this team to be successful, one of the keys is to stand together as a team.” The first home game for the Broncos will

be on Friday September 10 as they host Keene.

by Chris White With the divisional realignment by the NHIAA this year, the Campbell boys’ soccer team finds itself competing in Division 3 for the 2010 season. With that, Campbell will return a strong group of players focused on improving a 10-6-1 mark from a year ago. The team will also look to improve on a first- round exit from the Class M tournament in 2009. “I think we’re pulling things together,” Campbell coach Jeff Colbert said of his team this pre- season. “The keys to our season are going to be patience and execution.” The program may lack numbers (compared to other programs) with only 31 athletes in all, but it also has some experience, with seven seniors and four juniors on the varsity squad. Above all, the team will return a talented group of players. The team’s co-captains will be seniors Andrew Schibly and Tyler Germond. Schibly was a second team all-state selection last year. He will play the midfield and act as a field general for the Cougars. continued on page 10- Cougars
