Dear Neighbours
After the long summer holidays when the news is quiet and nothing much happens, September is often a busy month. When I was gathering our what’s on diary for this month there was so much
to include I had to cut it down to fit it into the pages we had available. As September is really the last month of summer and is usually a much sunnier month than August, we are planning to make the most of those sunny days before hats and coats are brought out of storage, and so have marked up the family diary with ‘things to do’ including the Hiltingbury Extravaganza on Sunday 19th September.
As I write this note my daughter is celebrating excellent results in her year 10 exams and lots of other parents are (mostly) pleased with their children’s results. We are very fortunate to have two excellent state secondary schools in Thornden and Toynbee, but if there’s a subject your child struggles with at any age, I would recommend attending an after school course. My own daughter found maths tricky (and who doesn’t!) so did a course with Bettermaths this year and said it definitely made a difference both in terms of results and in confidence. We have both English and Maths tutors advertising in the first few pages of the directory this month and don’t forget to check the small ads too.
On the subject of teens, I’ve put together an article about how 13 to 15 year olds can secure work and also what the law is on these matters (p6). This was partly prompted by the influx of mails I had last month when advertising for distributors. I have a really long waiting list now though so it’s not a call for more!
