Each student will be given safety instructions related to the specific course being studied. Each student shall be expected to know and to follow the safety rules of that course. Each student is expected to exhibit his/her knowledge of the safety rules. Behavior detri- mental to the safety of the student or others, cannot and will not be tolerated. Failure of the student to com- ply with the established rules and procedures set for each course may be a cause for his/her temporary re- moval from that course or activity.
Students are exposed to possible safety hazards that normally occur as part of a learning experience in courses such as Technology Education, Physical Edu- cation, Music, Family and Consumer Sciences, Art, Sci- ence, or any other integrated course of study.
By signing the permission slip at the end of the student handbook, you have given your child permission to work in the various laboratories. If you have any con- cerns or questions about any specific course(s), please contact the individual instructor.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES
At the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School two major princi- ples guide the making and enforcing of school rules. First, every student has the right to be safe and secure in their person and property. This means that no stu- dent may physically or verbally violate the safety and se- curity of another. Second, no student has the right to disrupt the educational process of others; included are classroom disruptions and disturbances that hamper the efforts of other students to learn. All expectations for student behavior are written with these two guide- lines in mind. CLASSROOM Expectations for behavior in the classroom are estab- lished by each teacher in conjunction with the policy of the Bedford schools. Overall, behavioral expectations are the same, but some individual differences do occur. Students should expect and respect these variations.
CORRIDORS When passing through the corridors one is expected to walk quietly, and stay to the right. Hallway noises are disruptive to classes in session. Unless classes are changing, passes are required to go any- where in the building.
DINING HALL The dining hall is a place provided for students to eat lunch with their friends. They are responsible for keep- ing the area neat and clean.
DANCES / SCHOOL EVENTS Participation in after-school events, such as 7th/8th grade dances and class trips are earned through dem- onstrating responsible behavior and commitment to academics. These events are limited to students en-

rolled at the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School. Attendance at such events is always considered a privilege. Stu- dents in poor behavioral or academic standing are pro- hibited from school functions until deficiencies are cor- rected. A student who has been suspended, or re- ceived multiple office or classroom detentions is con- sidered to be in poor behavioral standing and will be prohibited from the next scheduled event. Students who are failing as a result of not putting forth a reason- able effort and/or missing work are considered to be in poor academic standing. Until the student rectifies the status of their assignments and demonstrates improved effort, they are prohibited to attend dances and class trips.
BUS It is important for all students to understand that behav- ior on the bus should reflect acceptable classroom be- havior. Bus drivers have the responsibility of the safety and security of all students assigned to their buses, therefore it is important that respect for the bus rules and appropriate behavior are demonstrated at all times. Misbehavior and infractions will be reported to, and handled by building administration.
TRANSPORTATION This handbook provides parents and students with the information they need to know about student transpor- tation available to Bedford students. The handbook in- cludes information on bus routes and stops, on school procedures, rules for safe transportation, and student conduct/discipline procedures. It is vital that parents, students, bus drivers, and District staff work together to maintain a safe environment on the bus, which is our first priority. The District's Transportation Handbook can be found on the District's Website at
www.sau25.netíDepartmentsíTransportation.
BICYCLES Bicycle racks have been provided on the lawn area in front of the school. All bicycles must be kept in this area and should be locked.
Bicycles are not to be ridden on the grounds during school hours. All bicycles are to be walked off the school grounds. Students are expected to obey all Bedford safety and highway regulations regarding bicy- cles.
Motor powered bikes or snow machines are never al- lowed on the school grounds.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES Use of electronic devices, such as iPods, MP3 players, electronic games, and cell phones may be allowed dur- ing after school activities. They are not to be used dur- ing the school day. These devices are a distraction to the learning process and teachers can not guarantee the security of such devices. If these items are visible
