PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to a new year of the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School.
This handbook provides students and parents informa- tion related to policies, procedures, and activities that are integral to Ross A. Lurgio School. Please review the book together and use it as a resource throughout the school year. It also serves as an assignment book for students, and parents are encouraged to use the book to record homework assignments, upcoming projects, and tests. If used consistently, it serves as a valuable organizational tool as well as enhances communication between home and school.
Students, as you read through this book, please note the extra curricular activities and programs. Ross A. Lurgio is a special place, where you will feel a greater part of this community if you participate in some of the programs and activities.
Success in school requires a partnership which in- cludes teachers, students, parents and administration. I encourage students and parents to communicate with us about any concern or issue.
I am looking forward to working with a talented staff, en- thusiastic students, and supportive parents in develop- ing a learning community at the new Ross A. Lurgio Middle School.
Ed Joyce, Principal WHAT IS A MIDDLE SCHOOL?
The Ross A. Lurgio School is organized as a middle school which means a philosophy that the students who attend this school have unique qualities and needs that are different from those of elementary, inter- mediate, or high school students.
Grade levels are divided into units called Pods. A Pod is made up of a team of teachers and groups of students. Within the structure of the Pod, students are provided instruction in language arts, social studies, science and mathematics. The Pod is designed to operate as a small school with the services of the large school available to it.
Integrated Arts classes are offered in both grade levels. Students attend classes in Family and Consumer Sci- ence, technology education, art, music, physical edu- cation, and health. Foreign language (French or Span- ish) is a full course offering. Beyond the academic pro- gram, opportunities exist for students to take part in various after-school activities which include athletics, clubs, and the arts.
