If an athlete is to ride with a parent other than his/her parents, a note must be in the hands of the activities director on the morning of the contest. No parent may write a note for any individual other than their own child. Injuries will be treated as a separate situation.

3. Because alertness is essential at every competi- tive event, each coach may establish a curfew for nights preceding extracurricular contests.

4. A display of unsportsmanlike conduct toward an opponent or official will result in: a. Counseling by the head coach and a two game suspension for the first offense.

b. Suspension for the remainder of the season for any subsequent offense.

5. Theft or malicious destruction of any school prop- erty or individual's property will not be tolerated: a. First offense: The individual will be sus- pended from the activity for five school days and referred to the principal for appropriate ac- tion. At the end of this period, following con- sultation with the head coach, parents, and administration, a decision regarding further competition will be made.

6. If the student is absent the last school day of the week and the competition is on a non-school day, the student must bring the coach a signed state- ment from the parent giving permission to partici- pate. The coach will call the parent regarding the absence.

7. A student who has been injured and has received medical treatment cannot participate again until the date indicated by the student's doctor.

8. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages, drugs narcotics, look-alikes, or hallucinatory agents by extracurricular program participants is prohibited. A suspension from all remaining activities for the re- mainder of the year will be given. A referral of the student to his/her principal will be made and appro- priate action will be taken.

9. Before any suspension (provided for under the athletic code) shall take effect, the student will be given due process as provided by the School Dis- trict Policy. If the head coach is satisfied that the suspension is justified, the student shall be noti- fied. The student may appeal the coach's decision to the activities director and/or principal. The prin- cipal's decision may be appealed to the superin- tendent and/or school board.

10. The rules and regulations in this code shall apply to any violations, on or off school premises, during the season of participation.

11. There may be additional rules and regulations from the head coach. However, they must be approved by the principal and the activities director. Any ad- ditional rules and regulations must be in writing and on file in the school office.

12. Other forms of inappropriate and unacceptable behavior which are neither anticipated nor listed in

13

this code will be dealt with individually.

13. ACADEMIC COMMITTEE: There are many activities here at Ross A. Lurgio School. They range from a fine intramural program, to clubs, to extracurricular activities. However, the main focus of the Ross A. Lurgio Mid- dle School is the academic achievement of its students. We do not want participation in outside activities to take away from the academic areas of our students. Participation in clubs and extracurricular activities is looked upon as a privi- lege, not a right, which can be withdrawn if the stu- dent does not maintain a certain level of academic performance and behavior. The following guide- lines have been developed to help facilitate the student's eligibility to participate in clubs and extra- curricular activities. a. The following points will be awarded grades as received:

A = 4 Points B = 3 Points C = 2 Points F = 0 Point.

b. No student may participate in a club or an ex- tracurricular activity unless his/her achieve- ment and effort grade point average is greater than or equal to 2.0. An exception applies to a student who receives an F in achievement or a 4 in behavior. He/she will be ineligible to participate in extracurricular activi- ties

for the following quarter.

(Exception: If an individual is ineligible during the third quarter due to academic or behavioral issues on the second quarter report card, he/she may be able to tryout for a fourth quar- ter activity when those tryouts are held at the end of the 3rd quarter.) All integrated arts classes and foreign language classes will be counted in the student's grade point average.

c. All Ross A. Lurgio students come under the grade point criteria for eligibility.

d. During all activities, grades will be checked continually and anyone not maintaining a 2.0 grade point average will be removed from the activity for the remainder of the quarter. Grades received in each quarter will determine eligibil- ity for the following quarter.

e. The above academic guidelines will be moni- tored and acted on by the activities director in conjunction with the activity advisor or coach and the school principal. Parents will be in- volved at every step of this procedure.

f. In the event that a student becomes ineligible for a particular activity, the activities director will notify the athlete and a form letter will be sent to the parents explaining the details of the ac- tion taken.
