GENERAL PROCEDURES and REGULATIONS
SCHOOL CLOSING / DELAYED OPENING If school is to be called off for any reason, or if there is a delayed
opening, the district will notify
parents/guardians using the ALERTNOW Rapid Notifi- cation Service. This system will send a telephone call to the “primary emergency number” designated by the parents/guardians at approximately 6:00 a.m.
In addition, the following radio and television stations will be contacted:
WZID (FM 95.7) WBZ (AM 1030)
WFEA (AM 1370) WBZ TV (Channel 4, Boston) WHDH (Channel 7, Boston) WMUR TV (Channel 9, Manchester) BCTV (Channels 16 and 22) If it is necessary to call a 2-hour delay in the start of school, buses will make their normal pickups 2 hours later than the usual time, and the Bedford Early Educa- tion Program (BEEP) and morning kindergarten classes will be canceled. The Before-School Program will be delayed 2 hours. The school day will end at the usual
11 Contact Protocols:
* Your caller ID will display your school’s or the district's main number anytime a non-emergency call is gener- ated. Caller ID will not display a name with the number. * Your caller ID will display 411 any time an emergency call is being sent.
* Emergency calls will be made to all numbers provided simultaneously, while a standard notification will only be to the primary ALERTNOW notification number. * ALERTNOW will leave a message on your voicemail or answering machine.
* If you have such things as Telemarketer Zapper or Privacy Director on your telephone lines, you may not receive the call.
* ALERTNOW does not call extensions. If you have a direct dial number at work, you should provide your child's school with the direct dial number, not a main number plus an extension.
hour.
Infrequently, and only under the most unusual circum- stances, schools may be dismissed early. In the case of early closure, the middle and high schools will be the first buildings to close. The intermediate and elemen- tary schools will close following the middle and high schools' bus runs. Every attempt will be made to notify parents of the early closure by calling the above sta- tions to announce the early dismissal time, and by the use of our emergency notification service (see below).
Emergency Notification The Bedford School District has selected the ALERT- NOW Rapid Notification Service which will allow the district/schools to send a prerecorded message con- taining important information to ALL of our students' parents/guardians within minutes, if an emergency oc- curs. The ability to deliver a message is only as suc- cessful as the contact information we have for our fami- lies, so we are requesting that parents/guardians make certain that we have the most up-to-date direct dial numbers. This will be collected on an annual basis in the Fall when other student information is requested. If this information changes, please let your child's school know immediately.
The ALERTNOW service will also assist the schools in the future in reducing the resources needed to pass along key information regarding school events or re- minders on a limited basis as the district phases in the use of the service gradually over the next few years. Customary and usual procedures for individual parent/guardian notification will continue as normal The district will be utilizing the ALERTNOW for: * Emergency notification such as school evacuations and/or relocations
* Early dismissals due to severe weather. * Transportation emergencies. * Other emergency situation as they arise.
