SOUTH WALES SECRETS #3: ? Penarth Pier
Bethan Elfyn shares one of her favourite places in Cardiff – just around the corner from the city
“I was walking along the high cliffs in Penarth on Sunday, and looking down over the coast, the seas, the large cargo boats, Flatholm and Steep- holm and the skies were a thick, dark, menacing colour, but Penarth Pier managed to shine and stand out. Whether eating cheesy chips, watching the fishermen, sunbathing, or bracing the winter wind, it’s a haven, a picture of a time gone by, and a small step away from the Cardiff busyness. I love it there. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it re-opened as an events venue too...?”

sitting amongst a handful of Victorian hotels and houses and one very good fish and chip shop. In August 2008, plans aimed at redeveloping the pier’s derelict pavilion went public. The plan was to install a 98-seat cinema and theatre, a cafe and gallery and a bar, but despite securing over £800,000 of funding work has not yet begun on redeveloping the pavilion.

EVENT
Eat 35 garlic cloves, win a grand
In a glorious celebration of French culture, Renault Cardiff will this month be holding an open competition at their garage on Penarth Road to see who can eat the most cloves of garlic in one minute. The winner, should they manage to munch their way through more than 34 (the current world record), will receive £1000 in cash. Expect to see a lot of cash-strapped singletons gurn- ing their way through bulb after bulb at this doubtlessly enter- taining event on Sat 11 Sep. Those who lack the temerity to consume enough garlic to floor the entire population of Transylvania will be pleased to hear that this one-day joie de vivre includes other events such as a snail half-marathon, can-can demonstration, kissing masterclass and a French food festival. Bored of Cardiff’s pre- dictable charms? Looking for a certain je ne sais quoi? Your search is over.
