New boutique dresses Miss Universe Wales contestants
Flying in the face of reports that Cardiff’s indepen- dent shops and boutiques are struggling, a new boutique has opened in Castle Arcade. Couture Boutique aim to sell clothes with a wow factor that they hope will dazzle Cardiff shoppers. Expect plenty of glitz, glamour and unique items. What’s more, Couture Boutique have teamed up with this year’s Miss Universe Wales – a glittering beauty pageant taking place at 411 Bar And Night- club on Sat 18 Sep. The ‘little black dress’ for the
Miss Universe entrants will be designed by Runway clothing and will be exclusively available from the boutique, along with evening dresses which will also be available from Couture Boutique. The Welsh winner of the pageant will go on to com- pete in the Miss Universe GB event in Birmingham, and the lucky winner will then head out to Vietnam for the global Miss Universe competition.

Speechless stuns at Edinburgh Festival
The Sherman Cymru’s celebrated play about identi- cal twins who communicated almost exclusively with one another is returning to Cardiff after a successful run at Edinburgh Festival. The play will show at Bute Theatre from Wed 15 Sep-Sat 2 Oct. Speechless is the striking true story of Jennifer and June Gibbons, diagnosed as ‘elective mutes’. The two are unusually close to the point where their very movements seem choreographed, and withdraw almost completely from society, choosing to communicate only with one another. The play explores why these unusually intelligent girls ended up in a mental institution. Speechless has been celebrated by the critics as an affecting tribute to Jennifer and June. Ironically, the two young girls who spent their lives retreating from the world have found themselves very much centre stage.
