ust as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is stress. While some individuals thrive under pressure, others de-

velop stress-related health challenges such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic pain and different types of cancers. Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine emeritus and founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Cen- ter for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has dedi- cated his life to bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society, in order to help individuals deal with stress. The author of Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindful- ness Meditation in Everyday Life, Kabat-Zinn began teaching his mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program at the clinic in 1979. Today, it’s offered locally at Scripps Encini- tas Hospital Conference Center. “Jon’s profound work promotes peace, inner reflection, compassion and tolerance,” says Registered Nurse Julie Chip- pendale. She and her husband, Dr. Thomas Chippendale, have been teaching Kabat-Zinn’s eight-week MBSR program at the center since 1998.

notes that individuals who learn mindfulness discover ways to participate in their own health and well-being. “Learning, growing and healing in ways that engage us in our life is re- ally worth it,” she advises. “Simply put, mindfulness teaches people that between stimulus and response, there is a space, and in that space is the freedom and power to choose a different response that can serve them better.” The practical course focuses on active participation and includes guided instruction in mindfulness meditation prac- tices; gentle stretching and mindful yoga; group dialogue and discussion, aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life; individually tailored instruction; daily home assignments; and four home practice CDs and a practice manual.
