ne of my favorite mantras— where your attention goes, your power flows—has helped me be a successful entrepreneur through- out my adult life. I live by the Four P’s—passion, perseverance, persistence and patience—and had a chance to practice them on my Long Island high school girlfriends during last month’s 35th class reunion. I actually got those East Coast Long Island girls to drink green smoothies and eat avocadoes for breakfast!

O During the weekend, we stopped at a restaurant where I found a Long Island

Natural Awakenings, and they were impressed that our publication is spreading the word coast-to-coast about healthy lifestyles and a healthier planet. We talked about how our East Coast upbringing had empowered us—we knew that with enough hard work and determination, we could make the things we believed in, happen.

But we also reminisced about the “down time” we enjoyed while growing up.

With less technology and no Internet bombarding us with constant stimulation, life was simpler. Our days were spent outdoors in nature. We hung out in my tree house, admired the leaves changing color, built snow forts, read books, watched for the first signs of spring and let our imaginations soar. We experienced the four seasons as nature’s creative expression, and they nourished our souls. Today, my creativity is fueled by everyone who helps me build this monthly publication. Co-publisher Julie Hollingsworth, a homeopath, reminds me daily to focus on the abundance of positive energy that surrounds us. Layout artist Erica Northman designs a monthly masterpiece for San Diego and other Natural Awak- enings publishers across the country. And Editor Linda Sechrist, whose creativity sparkles throughout our pages every month, has just advised me that San Diego will be the first and longest stop on her upcoming Stone Soup Listening Tour. Read the news brief about this exciting road tour—it’s taking her to 11 cities where Natural Awakenings is published—and contact me if you’d like to schedule an interview. Our advertisers help foster this collective creativity, too. Spramani E’Laun, for

example, whose Nature of Art ignites imagination in our children, and Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat, profiled in this month’s Community Spotlight, a visionary doctor and healer who combines science and spirituality. Even pets can boost our creativity—their non-judgmental love enriches our hearts and souls, setting us free to be inventive and express ourselves. I was reminded of that at the August Dog Days of Summer show, where I was wowed by the thousands of people attending with every type of dog imaginable. It’s clear that pet owners want to make positive changes in their companions’ lives, too, and that’s why we include a Natural Pets department in each monthly issue. I’d like to extend a special thank-you to the many individuals who visited my booth at the show and expressed appreciation for our free monthly magazine. Your gratitude is what fuels the passion and hard work that make Natural Awakenings possible.

Smiles bring positive changes,
