them in their pocket for what- ever purpose they need,” says Lee. “The fantasy knives are really more for collecting. We also have people who collect samurai swords. Some people do use them for practice, as well, so they defi nitely want to buy a good quality one, regard- less of price. But most of the people collecting, it’s really just from a basic interest to add to their collection.” Pacifi c Solution is also the
manufacturer of all the blades it carries, and the company has direct control over the level of

quality. The company is also able to set ground rules for who can and can’t buy its products. For example, all buyers are in- structed that they cannot sell to customers under the age of 18, in a warning explicitly stated on the invoice. Despite the popularity of
many of Pacifi c Solution’s prod- ucts, the company has not been totally immune to the effects of the recession. After all, many of the items Pacifi c Solution sells could certainly be considered luxury products. What Lee found was that the main impact of the recession was people not so much buying less, but buy- ing smaller, more affordable items. Once again, the peren- nial pocket knives continued to do well, as they still do. But as opposed to a year ago at this
