SUMMER IS traditionally the slowest period of the year for many independent retailers. To combat that problem, last year some local merchants in the Yuma, Arizona area came up with the, “$20 on the 20th
,” campaign, a promotion
in which many of the area busi- nesses advertised special offers on the same day, July 20, in a concerted effort to lure customers into their establishments. This year, the $20 on the 20th cam- paign was put into action once again, with the sales of some lo- cal retailers getting a boost. Three days prior, on July 17, the local newspaper, Yuma Sun,
put out a special section in which many of the tantalizing discount offers were featured. Some of them continued to be valid even beyond the July 20 promotion. The special section included a whopping 275 neighborhood businesses. Whole Health Prod- ucts, one of the local businesses, advertised a product called “Mir- acle Mineral Ball,” a reusable detergent replacement, for $20. Owner, Russ Trierweiler, reported to the Yuma Sun that his busi- ness picked up as a result of the ad and the coupon it contained. “They bought the Mineral
Ball and other products, so we’re very pleased with the results,” he said. Another local retailer, Jafra Cosmetics, made an offer
to
customers to, “Spend $20 on the 20th and get $20 free.” District manager, Norma Lopez, said this offer yielded positive results as well. “It’s a great way for women to come and try our products and get a discount,” she said. “The results we’ve had are good. Last year we were successful, and next year we’ll participate again.” ■
