Performing arts classes, career development opportunities, fi eld trips, outdoor adventures and social events are all part of Chandler Recreation Division’s agenda of new programs for teenagers this fall. Registration for these activities is now in progress at www.chandleraz.gov./breaktime.

For years, Chandler operated after school and evening Satellite Recreation Centers at Andersen, Willis and Santan junior high schools. Reductions in the City’s 2010-11 fi scal year budget resulted in the elimination of those programs. However, the need for safe and fun activities for teens remains high and Chandler recreation coordinators sought to continue offering a wider variety of classes at other city locations.

“Staff has been busy this summer preparing for this transition of the Chandler Recreation Teen Programs, and we are very excited to provide a new selection of activities that will help increase creative skills and camaraderie among teens from different high schools,” says Recreation Coordinator II Erika Berry. “The programs are similar to what we offered in the past, but they include exciting new themes and will be held at Chandler public libraries, parks, pools, the Boys and Girls Club and city recreation facilities.”

A sampling of the new programs include a basketball league, the fi rst “Teen Art Show” and “Open Mic” nights at the historic McCullough-Price House, and a musical recording session at the new Chandler Boys and Girls Club called “Drop Da Beat.” Other options are “Teen Chef,” “Survivor: Teen Edition” and “Friday Night Fun.” In addition, City staff will continue to provide overnight lock-in events and fi eld trips such as a visit to Sunsplash on Aug. 28, and the “Magic Mountain Turn- Around” trip in December before the school intersession.

One of the most popular Teen Programs in recent years has been the annual Chandler Unitown Camp, which fosters diversity and leadership skills for teens ages 15 to 18. The excursion returns Oct. 6 through 11 in Prescott. Applications are available at www.chandleraz.gov/teens and are due Sept. 30. Also on the horizon, is the seventh annual Teen Talent Competition held Fri., Jan. 28, 2011 at Chandler Center for the Arts. Audition applications for teens looking to sing, dance, rap or play an instrument will be available in late November. For a complete list of Chandler Teen Programs, pick up a copy of the fall “Break Time” or visit www.chandleraz.gov/breaktime.
